Subject: Abu Clutch Bearing

I have a question for you folks about Abu's clutch/anti-reverse bearing. I have a C4 that I went through and did a cleaning on (fairly new at this also) and put it all together and everything worked just fine. Put on a light lure and did a few casts in the back yard to make sure it worked. Well now with some open water I went to a lake and put on a mag dawg to toss around for a bit and once I started casting the anti-reverse started going bad. It was just a little slop after a few casts but quickly ended up with half turns backwards. I took the reel back apart, cleaned out any moisture or any oil that may have gotten into the bearing with a Q-tip and put it back together. Again no problems with it, no play what so ever. Now again with a heavy lure it's got some play again. Any ideas what I may have done wrong? I did swipe a little grease in there when I first cleaned it and after wards read I shouldn't have done that. So that's why I went back through and cleaned out all that I could. Any thoughts on possibilities would be great. Also, could it be related to how tight I have my drag star set? Seems once I crank that down to work a lure it adds to the sloppiness.

Flush the bearing with liquid (zippo) lighter fuel or something similar to make sure all the grease and oil are out. Make sure you haven't put too much grease and oil in the gearbox. It will leach into your drag stack and anti reverse bearing it there's too much. While cleaning the AR bearing with lighter fuel, check it carefilly to make sure all the little leaf springs are there. If you've cleaned it with a q-tip and rubbed it ther wrong way you might easily have snapped off one or some of the little leaf springs, or got cotton wool fibres stick in the bearing.

Tim, am I understanding you correctly that the AR bearing should have nothing at all on it? I've had a few stop working because they got caked up with grease from when they assemble the reel. I've always cleaned them and put a drop of oil in there, and that seems to fix it. You are saying no oil no grease, nothing?

They come with a very slight amount of oil from garcia. Clean out the dirt w/WD-40 and a brush and then that should pretty well do it.

WD40 is a bad product to use on reels as it leaves a varnish on the bearings which makes them noisey and need replacing quickly.

The AR bearings can either be left dry, or given the very smallest drop of very light oil. Heavy oil and grease cause them to stop working, and especially in cold weather when the oil/grease thickens. That's usually when the problem first presents itself.

I really appreciate the advice. I think you got it right on. I put a very very small dab of grease on the bearing and my first time out it was both cold and wet and it was bad right away. since then I've wiped it out lightly with a q-tip and it has improved and I was getting some grease out of it. Can a person us a parts cleaner instead of the zippo fluid? Just curious... I will definitly buy some lighter fluid to do it right. I'll let you know if my reel gets back to normal or not after I try your recommendations. Thanks boys... much appreciated.

I'd be very careful with parts cleaner -- its great stuff but it will dissolve some plastics and paint. Not sure about the plastic tabs that hold the AR bearing together, but I think you'd be better off with a milder solvent, even something like detergent.

Now that I think about it, all the reels I've had trouble with were in cold weather, after I had fished with them in heavy rain.

I kind of thought the same thing about the cleaner and plastic but works greats on removing grease/oils! so I thought I would throw it out there. I'll be giving it another cleaning tonight and try it again tomorrow.

Took it apart last night and noticed there is still just a film of lube on the bearing sleeve/bushing(?), anyways, I cleaned that all off and cleaned it out with the fluid. Noticed it seemed to be working correct again but the final test is casting it out. Just got back and it works perfect again. I tossed half my box with the reel and no problems. thanks for the advice on how to clean that grease out. worked perfectly
