Hey! I'm about to order plenty of new lures from Rollie and i'm looking for great high speed swimbait trolling lures....I tried a lot of lures and according to me, most of them cannot stand to be trolled up to 6 mph. They usually flip or surf!!!MY favorites for high speed trolling are 10 inches jakes.
Any suggestions ??? |

Location: Northern IL | Not sure what yo mean by high speed "swimbait" trolling lures, but if you want a swimbait (plastic) to run fast try adding weight in front of it. It could take as much as 4-8 oz depending how deep you want it to run.

Make sure you check and tune every bait for it's straightness to reach it's maximum intended depth with the shortest line possible. |

Location: Land of the Musky | My Super Cisco has been up to 16mph+ and my new Mag Shad got up to 10mph+. Only reason they did not get more speed is because the drag could not be set any higher and no more thumb pressure could be applied to the reel.
My side question is, what is the fastest anyone has trolled and caught a muskie? All this data is good but if nobody trolls at 16mph (LOL) then I have no reason to test and collect data at those speeds...

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Try a 16cm/6.3" Zam, or a Zalt Z. I have caught both muskie & pike on them. The Zam will easily troll up to 10 mph. I actually caught a ~37" pike at ~9.4 mph (gps speed) on a Zam 16CM. The Zalt Z can troll to even higher speeds. Two entirely different actions.

| In response to the side question:
A couple years ago on Vermilion a friend and I were on a fairly well-know spot on Comet when we noticed a lot of cisco breaking on the surface behind us out in deep open water. We went out and cast for awhile, then decided to troll for a short bit before moving on. My friend was pulling a white/nickel bucktail but was losing confidence so he reeled it in quickly to switch. We were trolling at 5 mph at the time and he was reeling as fast as he could. The bucktail blew out and was just skipping across the surface as it was quickly reeled in. By now you know the rest of the story. When my friend pulled the bait out to change, we both saw a musky swim past the boat wondering where the lure had gone.
Estimated lure speed = ????
I'm sure just about everyone has a high-speed musky story. If they want it, you can't reel fast enough to keep it away, even with a 5 mph "head start". |
