This is bad, right??? Aluminum boat, charger is mounted to an aluminum bracket on the boat. It did not come with rubber 'feet', or was there any word about this happening. Any ideas. Only used the starting battery today, and it shouldnt be on long. Any ideas???

First - It sounds as if you have a missing safety ground problem and a faulty charger. Then again it could be problem with your house/garage wiring(how old is the house?). Does the charger have an three-prong AC plug, with the ground pin intact? What about your extension cord and the garage outlet it's plugged into, are they all three-prong?

If the answer is no to any of the above, be very careful, you could wind up dead! If all the answers to the above questions are yes. Can you plug it into a GFI outlet, i.e., the kind you normally find in the bathroom/kitchen and sometimes outside of newer homes (one with the test & reset buttons)? If the GFI trips, get the charger tested and your garage/outlet wiring checked. A qualified electrician should be able to help you. You can also get an "idiot light" AC circuit tester at most hardware stores & Home Depot/Menard's, etc. It's just a power plug with some lights. It can tell you if the outlet is wired correctly.

This is a very good reason for having a extension cord whith the GFI circuit protection. Sure they cost more, but it could be your or someone else's life.

Call me at 608-847-6123 if you want to discuss directly.

Good luck!
Al

We have a 23% humidity right now. A have a silver tarp that I was dragging across the grass to lay over the boat when I had touched the boat thru the tarp and got the first couple of shocks. Supsequent touching with my fingers brought more zaps, not holding the tarp at all this time. I'm still questioning it as I have never got shocks. and now my hair on my forearm stood up when close to that tarp. Standard silver and black that I added a few extra grommets to.

This extension cord is plugged into an ouside outlet on the 'older house' that my bro in law installed. It is a 3 prong outlet, as is the brand new Cabelas charger, and is the extension cord. He is pretty up on the electrical part. This is the same cord I have used for the past two seasons with the portable charger. He was not at home in St Louis, but I will try later. This cord is just a standard cord. I remeber reading about getting a better cord to run the ProSport II. I wont have the boat out for at least a week now due to weather and work. What type of cord should I be looking for? What guage???

Bruce, the ground wire might not be hooked up on the outlet. It may be a 3 prong but if the ground is not hooked up it is only a 2 prong.

Went out to look, and there is a wire runing from the outlet down to a metal rod in the ground, under the deck. It is still firmly attached.

Bruce,

I had the same problem when we installed our new charger system. Seemed to go away after awhile. Let me dig up the past thread on it.

Al has some great advice and really went all out to try and help out, so thanks Al!

Come to think of it, our charger may have been from Cabelas.

Talked to my bro in law. He said the outlet was a proper one and after I went out to look, it was there that I saw the reset buttons in between the outlets. Never knew they were there. Then I went and took the charger off the plate, placed it on a piece of wood, plugged it back in, and no shock. Then mounted charger back in the original spot, on the plate, plugged back in, and NO shock. Had my bro in law on the phone as I was doing this. What if I was standing in a little water from the bunks dripping or the shoes had moisture on them?? The plug from the charger was hanging off the back of the boat, but it was not touching the ground or any water. I read the posts from last September. Ours is an old house, with 2 prongs installed. Bro in law said what I felt must have been low cause it did not trip the switch. Really stange.....

'Trons are weird things. The haunt us alot working on helos. I'm a mechanic, and don't work much with electronics on the airframe, but do enough and have seen enough to know that if there's a path to ground, it'll find it. Move it around a little, or remove and reinstall, and remove the path, and you're good to go.
