Message Subject: Best Reel for Big Bladed Baits

Musky Hunter recently published an article that discussed the big-bladed bucktails and listed reels from a variety of companies that could handle such lures. I'm in the market for a new reel and would like some opinions as to which way to go. I personally own the Abu 7000 IHSN that I used last year for DCs. This year I'm going to use it exclusivley for big soft plastics and want a reel to replace it that has the best combination of weight, gear ratio, and quality components. The 7000 IHSN is, in my opinion, a little heavy. I like the gear ratio and weights of the Penn 965 and 975, but have never personally used them before. The reel will be used with a 8'6" custom rod by Professional Edge. Thanks for your opinions. James

Location: Contrarian Island | I have used the 975's for a few years now and have been very happy...I have them on 9' Pro Edge DB's and it's a great combo... I had a 7000 ics and sold it as I didn't think it casted as far and liked the gear ratio of the 975 better...

If I would use the St. Croix 300 Avid reel with a standard handle, would the reel break? I have heard that without a power handle or low gear ratio that the reels break. Thanks. Tyler

Actually, a power handle gives you better leverage, and that will put more strain on the reel. In theory, a power handle could be more likely to do harm to the reel. You are right on with the gear ratio though. A reel with a higher gear ratio is more likely to have durability issues than a lower gear ratio, all else being equal. From what I hear, the Avid Series are nice reels that hold up pretty well to the double 10 blades. curleytail

Posts: 386 | Yeah, Avid/Luna great for large bucktails, but watch out for ripping dawgs and cranks -- the anti-reverse went out on mine after 1/2 season of use and I've heard many others with the same problem. GREAT reel for big bucks though -- smooth as silk, you can throw all day will ease.
