hi guys, i predominantly smallmouth fish in the new river of s.w. virginia, but i've had muskies break me off a half dozen times while deadsticking soft plastic jerkbaits(case sinking salty shads). they've angered me now, and i'm seeking revenge. don't worry though, i'm strickly a catch and release angler. when i actually land one of these things, i plan on giving it a stern talking to, with plenty of harsh language, and possibly a little chest thumping after the release.

the river is hitting the 50 degree mark, so i'll be loading up my kayak soon and will take my first float(hopefully) next tuesday.

i've been told to throw swimbaits at wood and twitch it like a dieing fish so it looks like an easy meal. we'll see. river muskies are strange fish...you never know what you're going to get from them. i guess that's part of the appeal.

my gear is a 7' st.croix avid mh power fast action casting rod with a diawa tda153h7 reel and power pro 6/20 line and a 6" leader. i'm sure that's a pretty whimpy stick by y'alls standards, but in a yak, space is limited and all gear has to multi task. my baits are minimal...6" calcutta swimbaits, 1/2oz neals custom spinnerbaits, rapala cranks, and buzzbaits. the rest of my gear is devoted exclusively to smallies(i love 'em).

i can carry 4 rods in my yak. all are casting gear. i have a taste for st. croix avid rods and diawa reels, but i do have one custom build g-loomis that i'm very fond of.

anyway, my season is about to kick off. i truly hope the weather breaks for you guys very soon so you can get out as well. wish me luck.

Howdy, Patrick! Good to see someone else on here from 'out east'. I'm in SE Ohia and a buddy of mine in Beckley WV is trying to help me get a trip together on the New. How far are you from Blacksbrug and the WV border? I appreciate the water temp info, how are water levels? I heard that down past Hinton (below the Bluestone dam) the river is up 5.5 feet!

I've got a Basstracker with a 9.9 and I'm looking for places to launch and float. Any help would be appreciated, if uyou could click on the PM button and send me a message it might just help. Be glad to swap bait advice too. thanks! m

Patrick- To stop the bite off's, try using a ~ 15" 50-80lb flourocarbon leader, the smallie's won't mind.

Have fun!

I love the notion of muskie of any size from a kayak. Welcome and Good Luck.

Nice work! I'm excited to hear what you land! We got several muskies out of kayaks last season, it's loads of fun, but a little scary when the big girls slam it at boatside. Biggest muskie i've ever seen hit a walleye i had on in a yak, and towed me all around the place for a long time before letting go. Good luck and have fun!

You can use wire like 45 lb mason 7 strand or even 60 lb mason 7 strand. Smallmouth dont care. Here are two Smallies that thought they were Muskies. They were both caught on the Talonz Little Claw twitch bait. Smallmouth love that 6.75 inch twitch bait. Kingfisher
