| i love topraiders and super topraiders but ive always hoped that someday they would make a "mini topraider" or a smaller version of the topraider for spring or when the muskies just arent interested in the big stuff....do you guys ever think that the bucher tackle will make a "mini topraider"?
i know topraider arent to big but id like to get a smaller version of it.

Who says they arent interested in the 'big stuff'? Personally I dont think you need to downsize from the topraider in the spring, like you said the topraider isnt that big. The lac seul mini turbo is an option as well as the mudpuppy, but to be honest I think you'd be just fine with a topraider.

sometimes fish DO want smaller offerings over big ones. topwaters included.
in spring on some lakes I fish the super zara spook will get more looks and bites some days than a jackpot. fact
sometimes my mini lac seul turbo gets chomped when they don't want a topraider/chopper. fact.
let the fish tell you what they want, any given day that could be little or a big lure.

| I looked at those lac suel minnies and those look very cool may have to buy one.
Most of the fish here like smaller stuff through out the whole year not only spring btw pointer not that they wont take big stuff or anything but they are usually interested in the smaller artillery.
and there are tons of bass around here too so these small prop baits would be pretty cool to toss at them like Joe mentioned.

I understand that Brad. I wasnt saying that you never should downsize your baits, but there are no rules when it comes to musky fishing. I generally dont downsize to start out with, but if I get no takers on my normal baits then I likely switch things up. But I dont follow the 'by the book' and like to think more outside the box as opposed to the have to throw tiny baits in spring, only big slow gliders in fall type of ideas.
I'm not sure how you 'totally disagree' with me. I never once said that you should never downsize. I was essentially implying what you just wrote.
Also, AJ I think I have a muddpuppy I never throw that I'd give you. I'll let you know.

Location: Verona, WI | I love the Lac Seul Mini Turbo - an awesome bait with small size but big bait plop. It's actually one of the most versatile spring baits - I take the belly hook off and run it in >6" of water early in the spring.

Location: Grand Rapids MN | I think PP was pretty much saying the standard TR is a fairly small bait to start with (short and small profile compared to standard musky lures) and to me that is probably part of why it is so successful as a bait. Not only the sound but it's smaller size. I wasn't always a big bait fan (until recently) but even before when I looked into my box the TR was one of the smallest lures I had. this year I have been trying to get a better variety of baits, sizes, colors, for when the fish call for something different but now I'm going to have to look at one of those Lac Seul Mini's! Thanks alot guys! |

I use the floating head section split ringed to a dressed treble.

Location: Burlington, WI | I took a top-walker and flipped it around. What I mean is I took the bucktail and put it in the front instead of in the back. With the bucktail in the back it drags way too much. By switching it to the front the drag is gone, it pulls easier, and I think it has a better plop to it as well. The bait is able to be worked at various speeds now. Before it seemed like I'd have to really keep the bait moving fast otherwise the bucktail would drag it down from behind. I'm working on making one with a larger wood body, larger prop, and a larger flashabou skirt. I'll post a pic when I am done. |
