Posts: 1310 Location: Washington, PA | I pulled my boat out, trying to get ready to fish this weekend, absolutely no power. Batteries are fully juiced, and I checked the in line fuses coming from the batteries. It's a tuffy 1760, anyone lead me in the right direction of the next best place to find the problem? | ||

| If you have a 12 volt light-wire tester you might have to trace back. I would start with the motor itself since you only have the heavy gauge wires leading to it. From what you wrote, I would assume that the fuse on the positive lead to the motor is fine, but pull it out and use the tester there to see if you have juice getting up to the fuse. Then trace the positive wire back to the motor. Turn the key on and test there. Funny you mention your problems...mine was the same exact way! I found 3 fuses that had blown and for the life of me, I cannot figure out why that happened. The first one that blew was the fuse for the trim and tilt. Second one was my 5 amp fuse for the stereo, and then finally the 20 amp fuse on the main positive to the motor. I was miffed!! Steve | |||

Posts: 82 Location: Central WI | Have you tried a "test light" to trace your power wires until you no longer have power? That would be the first thing that I would try. Maybe something got at your wires over the winter!! Good Luck | ||

Location: Athens, Ohio | I'm not familiar with this boat, so these may be dumb: - where don't you have power? Troller or starter batteries? - any power anywhere - lights, horn, stereo? You might have two separate electrical systems - one for troller and one for starrter and lights, etc. See which is bad. There could be circuit breakers on the battery + terminals. Check them if so. Those 12v test pens are only a few buck as the auto parts store and really do help trace everything from trailer light issues to on-board problems. The way I figure, you got about 3 weeks before we'll need this on Salty F. m | ||

Posts: 32957 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The breakers on the trolling motor lines have little 'tabs' that stick out if one is kicked. Make sure those little 'tabs' are pushed back in flush to the breaker to reset. | ||

Posts: 5 | 95% of the time it's something SIMPLE. Yep, check the battery connections to make sure they are tight and not corroded. Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | I'm with Campfire- By the very nature, boat's and moisture go hand & hand. Moisture is not friendly to electrical connections. First clean the battery terminals, i.e., even if they look OK- corrosion problems with battery connections are not always visible. Disconnect the negative (-) first, then the positive (+). Clean and reassemble in the reverse order. This is especially true if the boat was fine when you stored it. I clean mine every spring! The issue also could be loose or bad/loose/corroded connections in the electrical system. Make sure any fuses fit snuggly in the holder (I've seen quite a few loose fuses in my electrical/electronics career). Your owners manual should have a electrical wiring diagram. This is like a road map, start at the battery and follow the map to each intersection (connection). Test for voltage, no voltage stop & investigate (you may need to go back to the last intersection/connection -it could be the problem). Take any suspicious connection appart, inspect, and clean as needed then reassemble (disconnect the battery negative(-) before doing this!). Reconnect the battery negative and retest. Cleaning equipment- fine sandpaper (don't use steel wool!), a pencil eraser works great for smaller connections. For battery terminal corrosion- neutralize the corrosion with a solution of baking soda and water. Clean thoroughly with fine sand paper and reassemble- Usually it's best to take battery completely outside the boat- clean, then rinse with fresh water and let dry before reinstalling the battery. If you don't have a schematic/electrical diagram - contact Tuffy- they should be able to provide a "as built" . This will not include any special wiring done by the marina/person who did the final rigging. Good luck! Al Edited by ESOX Maniac 3/13/2008 9:14 AM | ||

Posts: 5 | I have to laugh at myself, I don't always listen to my own advice regarding checking "simple" things. Last summer I installed a new cd player/radio in the boat and it worked perfect. The next week it was so full of static you could only pick up one or two radio stations and they sounded like crap. After spending 30 minutes crawling in holes (I can no longer fit in) and checking wires and antenna cables, grounds, etc, etc............ I realized the battery charger was plugged in and that was causing the interference !! DAAAAHHHHHH Edited by campfire 3/13/2008 9:02 AM | ||

Posts: 5874 | What year Tuffy? Does it have the electronic pad? There are circuit breakers under the console, that can be reset. Perhaps you popped a breaker? | ||

Posts: 1310 Location: Washington, PA | Well, after multiple attempts. The trolling motor is fine. Swapped out batteries, eliminating a battery problem as the culprit. Checked the breakers under the dash, no problems there. Still have no idea where the problem is. It's an '08. | ||
