I live on a small lake that is now thawing out. I live on a hill and can see spots where it appears that the ice is thawing the fastest. I won't bother trying to describe the lake bottom, except that there are a couple distinct basins up to 50' deep but I guess most of the water is is around 20' deep.

Do you suppose that these spots are where the ice is being hit from below by a current of warmer water?

And..

Do you think that springs are structure worthy of consideration when planning an approach?

Thanks

Ranger,
If you like big pike and there are big pike in that water, those springs will be where you want to be this summer. I have a couple lakes up here where I marked the springs that way, and when in that area even the surface water temps can be quite a bit lower. My experience, anyway.

I am noticing a similar situation on a lake I often fish. Is this a likely indicator of a spring? There are 2 places on the North bay where it has thawed, and now there are geese/ducks swimming around yet there are still trucks driving on the lake. Is it just shallow water thawing first, or a spring? These 2 spots are quite shallow and weedy. Other shallow similar spots have not thawed, so it got my attention.
