I've found this to be a good reel for this bait category. The lower gear ratio provides plenty of power for these hard-pulling baits. It hasn't been as reliable as the Shimanos I've used, but this is a good reel for that application. I have several. This year I'll be trying a Penn 975 for the same application. That's another one to consider.

I don't throw big baits all that much, but when I do, that's the reel that I reach for. I like it for double 10s particularly. I tried it for jerks and gliders but didn't like it as much since it doesn't have instant anti-reverse and that just seems a bit disconcerting after coming off a stable of reels that do have it. With the constant cranking involved in the big bucktail game, the lack of that feature isn't as noticeable. It would probably be fine for bigger cranks as long as you didn't do a lot of pausing and/or twitching. And then again, if you're used to a reel w/o IAR, it would probably suit you just fine. I've found the reel to be durable and fairly pleasant to use when cranking hard pulling baits.

When I first got my 7000(Big Game CL) I had problems with Jerking and ripping baits due to no Instant Anti-reverse like sorenson mentioned. After a little practice the reel can be very good for ripping lures, you just have to get the timing right with cranking the reel as you twitch/rip/jerk so the spool doesn't reverse back. It can be done after some practice. It's not my go-to reel for jerkbaits though.

I personally ONLY use abu 7000 reels. I also have a few videos with Dick Pearson. He only uses Abu's for all his fishing in the videos i have (the old style). He rips suicks, twitches jakes, and straight cranks at times with no problems. It is all what you get used to. IMO they are much more durable than Shimano since nearly every time i see one it needs some sort of service.
