Has anyone used this stick for throwing regular and magnum bulldawgs? What are your thoughts? I've used a 7'6" Heavy Avid for the past couple years and like it, but I broke that rod at the end of last season, so I'm looking for a SC that's comparable or better. Since the Avids are no longer being sold I'm considering a Legend. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Go with the TM86XH big dog legend for this line of baits,i think youll like it more for you choice of baits. The 7,9" heavy will do the job but it has a moderate action designed around cranks and may feel a little slopy with a heavy bulldog.

Yeah, I've been looking at that rod also. Looks really nice, but I'd like a rod that is 8' or less so that it fits in my rod locker.

ST CROIX MAKES AN 7'9" XXXTRA HEAVY. JUST PICKED ONE UP. I THINK IT WILL DO GOOD. I LOOKED AT THE 8' HM AND THOUGHT IT WAS TO LIGHT FOR BIG DAWGS. THAT IS WHAT THE FACTORY REP SUGGESTED AS WELL.

Hey, why don't you just send in your AVID to St. Croix. That rod has a lifetime warranty against breakage as long as you didn't break it by stepping on it or something.

Yeah, I know the Avids have a lifetime warranty and I've had good experiences with St. Croix's service in the past, but I pulled an airhead move to break the rod, so it was not a rod defect.

go to st. croix's website and read their "service and warranty" page, you will like what you read especially the part where they say it doesn't matter if "your buddy stepped on it or slammed it in a car door". i spoke to st. croix directly in late december about their legends and when i told them i had 4 premiers they offered to take them in on trade towards new legends purchased directly from them. i was ready to take their trade in dollars until i decided to have keith at pro edge build me custom legends more to my liking vs. the stock versions!

Rollie and Helens still has a few of the 7'6" Heavy Avids left. www.muskyshop.com

If you watched the Musky Hunter TV show this last weekend you would have seen what makes the Legend series balnks one of the best in the business.

Rick (St Croix Rep) gave Jim a piece of the Legend blank and Jim was unable to collapse it unlike a couple others he had. I have never built on a blank that is that strong. The hoop strength is incredible. Nice work by an American made blank.

One thing I forgot to mention.

I agree that 8-6XH would be the blank I would use for that application. Just have it built to 8 feet instead of the 8-6.

keith...you guided me to the perfect legend blanks that you used on my rods for the application i wanted to use them for...what is your reason for preferring the big dawg legend blank in an 8 foot version vs. the stock 8'6"...?

He was looking for something shorter so it would fit in his rod locker is all. If he liked the blank but did not like the length there are options to get it built to his exact specs using the same blank.

If or should I say when I get a chance this year...I am going to build a big bait stick on this blank in at least a 9 footer. Just preference is all.

I bought the 7'9 xxx last July strictly for the big bootails I make, they're over 2lbs wet and about 16" long. Heavy-stamped #10's and heavy beads/bodies. That rod throws them fine. Is it ever light in the hands for that ammount of power. Casting and twitchin a 13 inch Grandma feels like a Husky Jerk on this thing. It's a good rod, you won't want to put it down. That's what I found....before long I was using it for a lot more than just the giant bootails. It's a fun rod to fish with. That xxx blank makes my 7'0 heavy jerkbait rod feel like a toy lol. I don't have any 2 pound Bulldawgs, but they shouldn't be a problem. And yes, send in the Warranty Card becuase the Premier Series is now Lifetime too. St.Croix's a solid outfit, always have been. All my ice rods are St. Croix, all my walleye stuff, pike stuff and my trout/salmon stuff. I would like the 8'0 better though, I'm almsot positive. That'll be next

I used the 7'9" XXXH all last season and I too found it hard to put down, as it works great on a ton of different baits. In fact picked up the second one in late fall last season. i think on the premier its a 5 year warranty, not life???

P>S- Great on those extra large weagle type baits too!!!!!!
