| Dacron, I assume you fish the French also? The oldman and I have raised a few brutes when fishing for pike/bass, but have never targeted muskie specifically. I know there are some big fish there, but honestly, I wouldn't even know where to begin. We fish the main channel, east of Dry Pine Bay, atleast a good 20-25km run, past the hydro wires, first set of rapids, etc etc.

| That's a good patch of River, I fish both the Upper and Lower, the Lower has been the better of the two the last three seasons. You're already standing on third base if you've seen fish, that's excellent! Come back in the evenings. Fish all over both halves of the River show up in the same sets of areas year after year. Good spots are always better to check and re-check than spots that consistently show you nothing. There's just so much un-marked water. You've seen fish. The hard work is 90% done. Catching them is a lot less complicated. You could do a lot worse than fishing a run of spots an hour or two into darkness each night with a big bucktail or surface bait. We almost always cast the bootails I tie up, 10" jntd Beleivers, Thunderheads and standard Top Raiders on these spots at dusk. It only takes one cast at the right time, you sure can wear yourself (and your deep cycle battery) out pounding all day, only to return when conditions get good and catch one real quick. Early July/late June there are usually those nice, 35-40" pike around the muskie spots, too. We normally fish island chains and shoals that are in or just off the deep/main open areas. Lots of the time we're throwing up into the spots with the boat still in 20 to 60 feet of water. We're finding and fishing more and more coontail on spots, and the fish do like it, but old fashioned green cabbage seems to be the most consistent. Trolling produces too, often between spots, using the same handful of baits. Maybe add in a Super Shad Rap, 10 or 14" Jake and a Plow or Perchbait for that, they all work pretty good. All colours work, we get them on hot colours and naturals. If there's one around, it will probably go the first pass or first cast or three. I hope you nail one. |
