I was wondering if anyone has used spanky baits? They look really close to a cowgirl for 1/2 the price. Thanks

They all work the same. Unless the fish can read the pretty sticker on the Cowgirls

esox50girls actually work the best

I did run into Dan Moats of Spanky Baits on Eagle at AML. He seems like a real nice guy. I don't have any of his baits, but a lot of guys in the club like them, especially on Eagle.

sometimes "knock offs" are built as good or better than "the original"

spankys are built on heavier guage wire with heavier blades. gerrys girls and spankys are both great baits.

not taking any sides, but i heard from an unnamed source that, the reason theres a thinner wire on DCGs is for more vibration, i guess they experimented with .062, and didn't like the results.

We put about 7 fish in the boat on one .062 double 10 without having to rebend or fix it at all. Its still basically brand new. After 1 or 2 fish on the thinner stuff, it either has to be fixed, or it doesnt work the way it did before. Just saying...

As for vibration... the fish didnt seem to care that it was .062

All my Cowgirl stickers have fallen off so I am not sure if they are Cowgirls or brand X for the most part. Good baits though but a little on the pricey side IMO. Gander charges $29.95 the last time I was ther adn Cabelas was close to $25. Great marketing though and it has paid off for them big time!

I was just at Cabelas in Rogers MN and CG were going for $23.99 and on Muskytackleonline they are going for $21.99 so a big difference from the original $30 price tag when they first came out. Just thought I would throw that info out there.

i've been playing around with building some bucktails and i'm using .043 for smaller ones and .051 wire for d-10s specifically to get a bit of extra vibration. i don't know if it matters or not, but it adds to my confidence.
Muskie Mojo uses .062 wire for durability, and i've had extremely good success on the baits that Luke makes, including no issues with them getting bent up. the vibration is probably mostly the blades anyway.

even if you don't want to go as far as making your own bucktails, you can easily and cheaply buy a supply of wire (whatever diameter you prefer, bulk spool or pre-formed bucktail shafts) and then when a lure gets bent up by a fish, just cut the lure and put the components on a new, straight piece of wire. $20 of wire and a $5 round-nose pliers to twist your end loops means never having to replace a bucktail that's bent up.

I've never used the double 10's but am planning on giving them a try this year. A lot of people say they are all the same but are they really? As far as wire diameter vs fish catching ability I can only guess that's splitting hairs. The big difference I see is blades. Some use thin blades, some thicker. Different blades will change how the bait runs, no question about that.

I bought a double showgirl last year, hoping it would be like a double cowgirl in a smaller package. I was wrong, the blades run close to the shaft for Colorados. I doubt they put off much if any more vibration than a standard bucktail with a single #8 colorado (Mepps Marabou, Ghost tail, etc.). Not knocking thr double Showgirl. It's still a nice bait that I like, just not what I thought it would be.

So, how do the Spanky baits RUN compared to a Cowgirl. I would be looking for a bait that moves plenty of water with a high blade angle, and one that can be run fairly shallow if wanted.

Check out Gerry's girls. Thicker blades run a little deeper and I like them better than the thinner ones. Gerry will make whatever you want. Any color, any blade, thick or thin. Thinner blades are great for high weeds or shallow rocks.

I swtiched to the Spanky last year and didn't go back. When I first switched I carefully tested the two side-by-side with others in the boat with both being same color and found no difference at all. What I did find was a big difference in durability. The heavier blades on the Spanky were less prone to deformation near the clevis and also less prone to being dented or bent when fishing around rocks. A blade that retains it's original shape will start easier without requiring a kick-start. Also, a blade that retains it's original shape will run better at slow speed, such as when slow-rolling after dark. The wire is also much, much more durable.

I've heard the thinner-wire-more-vibration theory before and don't buy it. IF (and it's a big IF) one wire produced more vibration, which it doesn't, the contribution of the wire is insignificant and trivial compared to the vibration and turbulence created by the blades.

By continuing to use the Spanky I'll keep getting a stronger bait at a better price.

RE; Dbl Showgirls
I REALLY like showgirls for FASTFASTFAST burning better than almost any other blade bait I've found. They are a great late spring-fall bait for me, and not even remotely close to being in the same class as double tens. They serve a different technique entirely, really.
That said, my D10s are filled with a couple DCgs, More Gery's, and even more Mojo's. Follow that with a few Lungens, Shumways' and a few Spanky's. I don't really buy into the hype of the wire meaning much. What I do fall into, is that color is secondary to the vibration of the blades. I think the different varieties of blades is great. I've caught fish by throwing a different bladed bait back to a follow, and had them eat. same color, configuration, just different thump off the blades. (at least that's what I believe to be the trigger.) If I had two bucktails in a d10 in my boat, a Mojo, and a Gerry would be it.

I use Spanky, because they hold up better, less tuning of bait, means my bait is in the water more, and as my father would say, U can't catch a fish if your bait is not in the water. I like the thicker wire, less turning, thicker blades, will not dent around rocks. I burn my Spanky's with a reel that has a line pickup of 46", so the thick wire and blade is good for me. The 51 wire needs to be tune all the time and when U catch a fish you have bend it back to shape.
