 Posts: 37 Location: Mid Wales, UK | These are very general rules, a whole load of other factors need to be taken into account and no doubt someone will be along to shortly to point out my mistakes. But generally speaking round lips will dive deeper than square lips. Square have a wider wobble and twitch better imo. A thin lip cuts through the water better and so will dive deeper with more vibration. This usually means using metal as its stronger. Metal will probably be heavier and so will make the lure heavy towards the front. This needs to be taken into account when weighting the bait. So really it all depends on what you want out of your lure. Metal and plastic are not better than one another, they just do different things. Like someone else said, its a great idea to make up a few with different lips. That way you can see for yourself what each style will do and use that knowledge when building baits in the future.
