Posts: 32890 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | My personal preference for Weagles is 5.5 or so. Same with the Rumbler, Double 10s, and the like, just get a power handle for the big spinners. I use the Okuma 400 quite a bit, great reel.

Posts: 2112 Location: The Sportsman, home, or out on the water | I like a high gear ratio for Walk the dogs (such as the weagle), as well as gliders, Dive and rise and Soft plastics (for the pull and pause technique). You want to be able to pick up a bunch of line in a hurry. It is far more important with all jerkbaits, and Suzy's and Curley Sues, as pretty much half your hits will feel like a walleye taking a jig, or, you just see your line jump. High Ratio for baits you do not have constant contact with, such as a buck or a crank. For Big, Tractor like pull, Double Bladed baits, like Gerry Carroll's Gerry's Girls, Give me an Abu 7000! You could almost whinch your drunken brother's truck out of the ditch with that reel! Edited by muskynightmare 2/4/2008 10:25 PM

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | You don't usually need a high sped reel for topwaters. Most people are going to fish prop type topwaters slower than they would a bucktail. Actually, I fih most topwaters relatively slowly in comparison to lots of other baits. You could use a high speed reel for Weagles. I use a Gander Guide Series with a 5.2:1 ratio, and it works fine. With a bait like a Weagle, you don't use the reel to work the bait. You work the bait with the rod and pick up the slack with the reel. A higher speed reel usually just allows you to pick up the slack with a shorter turn of the handle. Finally, from what I hear the Okuma 400 does a good job with the big double 10s, especially with the power handle. curleytail

Posts: 7049 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | The Okuma is 5.1:1. 5.5, never heard of that. I used a 400 for double 10s a good portion of last year and was very happy with the castability, smooth retrieve and power in cranking (I had a power handle on mine). A note on the higher speed reels: yes, they're great for topwater side to sides, but my suggestion is to learn to do the same motion with a lower speed reel. That reel will probably last longer and be more flexible for different applications. But this, like many things, comes down to personal preference.

Posts: 720 | Hi One thing that should be mentioned is keeping the reel fully spooled. With the reel completely spooled your retrieve rate will be quicker compared to having it spooled 1/2 or 3/4 of the way. By the way I agree with Steve and Slamr on using the lower gear ratio. Especially, with tossing the bigger bucktails. Dave
