Did a search and it brought up a March 2007 posting. Shep was going to get back with the author. He might of thru a pm, but I dont know. The new Garmin's have an internal antenna. Are the new units any better with them, or are externals always going to be better? Thanks, the electronic newbie

I don't know if externals are better, just more common? I would want the puck to have as unobstructed a view as possible, even avoiding windshield/windscreens. I have also heard unconfirmed rumors that units with internal receivers need to be kept verticle in order to maximize reception, so you wouldn't want one on the bow where you'd need it tilted for visibility. Good luck,

I have two Lowrance, one with internal (522IGPS) and one with external. Seems to me the external is better but My 522 is up front and didn't want to mount another puck.

If I recall correctly the external will have a longer reception range which is beneficial for those fishing oceans/great lakes. I don't think it's an issue for those who fish inland waters primarily. I have one of each and have never had a problem. Never been on great lakes or ocean, though.

I probably did get back via PM.

My experience is that the internal works nearly as good as the external. Once I got my LMS-334 sent in, and returned, it works flawlessly. That said, I have it networked to my X-11 on the console and the receiver, which is on the front cap.

The resaon I say it works nearly as well, is because when I am in my garage, the 334 on internal receiver sees just as many satelites, and locks in just as quickly as the X-111 with the external. And this is with the big doors closed! I get 4-5 satellites that way, through the windows.

As for not working better on the ocean or great lakes, that is simply not true. There are so many satellites up there, you are never that far away from them. You only need 3 to lock on to. I ususally have 10 or more with good enough signals to lock, with either receiver.

You mention Garmin. I think the Garmins had an edge in internal receivers until last year or so. I think they are pretty even now. Either way, I would not shy away from a unit with an internal receiver.
