Being that I tend to get bored with just buying lures I thought I'd give making some a try. What do I need to get started making bucktails? I was thinking of trying a flashabou version. Is there a website that I can buy supplies from? Any tips would be great.

lots of good posts on suppliers here, I usually use staminainc.com for my components but there's plenty others. if you have a fly shop near you most of your materials should be available there, then order blades and wire forms.

tear apart one you already have, make a list, rebuild it, and you'll learn everything you need to know to make one yourself. probably want to order some rodbuilding thread or pick up some embroidery thread instead of getting that at the fly shop.

Very good advice, I don't make large quantities so I order most my stuff from Rollie and Helens but it will cost a little more. Make a list of materials and when you feel you've thought of everything place an order and start practicing. My first couple were some ugly things. I eventually took them apart and reused the components. Anymore I like mine as much if not more than store bought ones.

I made my list of materials but there's one thing I can't seem to figure out from looking at pics/ my own lures: Do you tie your bucktail/skirt material right on the wire or do you put something else around the wire and tie to that?

most of the bucktails like double cowgirls use wire coils to tie to. this is helpful for those times when you have to cut the hooks, you dont ruin the bucktail. just simply replace the hooks and keep throwing.

So I put in an order with Stamina and it should come next week. The only thing I didn't buy were some sort of keel weight. I was thinking of using an egg sinker and flattening it but what size shoudl I use? Do I want to make it flat to the point where it pinches the wire and doesn't move? Also, I was thinking of making mine with a combo of Flashabou and Sili Legs, how much Flashabou do you use per bucktail? Do I want it to look really full or not? Thanks for the help, I'll figure this out someday.

Double Cowgirl-like baits = 2 packs of reg sized flash. Apparently, 1 pack mag flash works for the same style bait. I'd say the "fuller" the better. Egg sinker (1/2 oz) works for me, I know others like the keel weight. There was a post a while back about making your own keel weights. Run a search.
