Posts: 102 Location: Bowling Green, KY | I'm new to musky fishing, but have been bass fishing for years and have tons of bass lures. I'm in the process of building up a basic assortment of musky lures. I've got a pretty good start buying used stuff on e-bay, but I'm setting aside $250.00 of my tax return just for lures. I hate to burn up alot of that on "musky" spinnerbaits when I have several "bass" spinnerbaits in the 3/4 to 1 1/4 oz. range that have big enough hooks and heavy enough wire to get the job done, but they are all the R-bend wire style and that doesn't lend itself to wire leader use. Most musky specific spinnerbaits run from $10-$20 and I'd rather use this money for glide and jerk baits, a few crank baits and to fill a couple holes in my topwater catagory. I will mostly be fishing the rivers here in KY and that means a lot of laydowns and log jams, so a spinnerbait will be more practical than an in-line style. Is there any good methods for modifying these spinnerbaits to use a snap on leader? Thanks in advance, Roger.

Posts: 1046 | You can take the blade off and clamp a finishing nail or awl into your vise, stick the r bend into the nail and grab where the blade goes with a visegrip and do a single wrap. Practice on an old one its really very simple. And if at first your loops are a little funky, just put a split ring in there and hook your leader to that. Most of that wire will be .040 to .051 and plenty formable.

Posts: 431 | I have tied off a bunch of spinnerbaits using thread or old power pro and coating it with super glue. I prefer zap a gap. I'm hesitant to start bending the baits if they don't need to be bent.

Posts: 1046 | I have caught a few fish in my time and would never trust anything other then a full metal circle for musky fishing. The chances of leaving a bait in a fishes mouth are to great not only on the fish but on the fisherman too!

Here's a quicky: Simply slide a split ring over the open loop where you would clip the snap. It will not slip down the bait and neither will your snap.
