I am looking to put together a second musky setup. The setup I have now has the Abu Garcia 6600C4 on it. I only fished a few times last year for musky, but I plan to start ramping up the hunt. I have read many good things about both reels, but just wondering if you had to go with just one of them which one would it be? I would like to get a reel that will last a while and perform very well. Thanks for any and all help.

The Luna. Although I have not used the other, I can attest to the quality and durability of the Luna. Nothing is bulletproof, but comparing these 2 reels is apples and oranges. Much different price point as well. Steve

I have a couple Gander Mountain GS 66 reels, which are the same at the Trion 66. They have worked well for me, and have help up pretty well over the last couple seasons of use. For somewhere between $80 and $90, I don't know if you could bet them. My only complain is the paddles on the handle are a little small, and made of a harder plastic (not soft rubber) which ican be hard to grip when wet.

Saying that, I'm sure the Luna is a nicer reel, and probably hold up just as well. Never used one but have heard pretty good things. So, do you want a good dependable (or a couple), or do you want one that's going to be really nice? I don't think either reel will let you down.

I have both and agree with what curleytail and Steve said. If you're going to buy one reel I would buy a Luna if you can afford it. If you're going to buy multiple reels I would buy Trion 66 you won't break the bank near as bad. As curleytail said the handles on the Trion 66 aren't the best I've put the handle that comes on the luna on all of my trions 66 and it's amazing what a difference the handle can make. The only problem with upgrading the handle is the whole point of the Trion 66 is to stay cheaper. So you take a $90 reel put a $30 handle on it now you're up to $120 it's getting closer to the cost of a Luna which is a better reel. If you have 6 or 7 reels the savings with the Trion 66 is noticeable.

All I can attest to is that the LUNA is one sweet reel. I think it is the best reel, hands down. However, if you don't want to break the bank, judging from past discussions about reels on this forum, I suggest checking out the Okuma Induron.

good luck,

If you want to keep it near $100 buy the Gander Mountain 66, same thing as the Trion. You can put a Shimano TE handle on it for $15. Then when it breaks take it back to Gander and get a new one on the spot. They do last surprisingly long and take alot of abuse.
The Luna is a much better reel but twice the money. If you can afford the Luna then spend the extra money and get a quality reel.

Where can you get a TE handle for $15? I put the big Calcutta double paddle handle on mine. I like it a lot (the gold color doesn't match but oh well), but it cost $30. I would have mentioned that too, but for $120, I would look into the Induron, which is what I plan to put on my next rod.

Why buy a whole new handle when you can get these for $5? http://www.reelgrip.com/ I have these on most of my reels...need to order a few more though as I want them on everything.

I agree the reel grips are nice and I use them on all of my other reels (bass, walleyes, etc.). I switched out all of my handles for the Luna for two reasons one is the grips, amazing. The second is the arm is longer on the Luna handle. The distance between the nut on the handle that holds it to the reel and the actual part you hold (grip) on the Luna handle giving you more power for burning bucktails, etc. Combination of the to make it worth it in my opinion.

U can add a 4x7x2.5 bearing in each of the paddles of a LUNA HANDLE to make them as smooth as butter, they come stock with a plastic bushing. U can get the bearings at VXB BEARINGS.
