| which rod do you guys prefer the figrig or the st.croix rod? |

| I have two 8' Figrigs ok rod but I have had so problems with em. Going back to St. Croix for this year.

Location: Wausau, Wisconsin | St. Croix is a very nice rod, however, I do prefer the warranty, customer service and performance per dollar out of the Fig Rigs. The feel and weight of the Tooth Tamer is the best I've fished with. Now that I throw a lot of very big baits, the Jawbreaker is tops hands down. |

| Ajohnson, I have yet to have one break. However I have had a reel seats break, cork handle break and an eye fall out.

i have a couple of limited edition figrig or whatever its called.
also 8inchcrank how much do those jawbreakers run for?

Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Love the figs, but I've had a few replaced due to breakage. Last time I asked Kevin to replace with a Heavy action, which he did...no issues since....
I really miss the whip of a nice M/H rod, though, so am having Keith make me up one of his 9'ers for my main bucktail rod. |

| I used to have 2 Tooth Tamers as well. These were from '03 so I cannot say what they latest are like.
However, I currently own 4 St. Croix Avid rods which, as I'm sure many of you already know, are being phased out as St. Croix is adding musky rods to their Legend Tournament series. My Avids are all 7'6"; 2 MH 3/4/-3 oz. and 2 H 2-6 oz.
Personally, I liked the Avids better than the Tooth Tamers. The blank is a little thinner which I prefer. I never liked what I call the "broomstick effect". However, some may not care and some may prefer a thicker rod.
As for weight, by the time I added my Calcutta TE's or even when I had my Abu Garcia Ambassadors, I didn't really notice the few ounces the rod weighed any longer. On a side note, when I had Tica Caimans, I noticed that they were a lighter reel, albeit not as smooth or well constructed as the others, in my opinion.
I also like the way my Avids load up. I had some cheaper rods for a while (not the Tooth Tamers but something else which will remain nameless  and I did notice that I was getting tired out there. It wasn't until I realized I was using the cheaper rods that I made the connection.
My father, who is in his early 70s, tends to get tired quickly when he's out there with me. He was extremely impressed with the Avid / Calcutta TE combo.
From what I've heard, the Legend Tournament series rods are incredible. St. Croix has new technology which significantly improves rod strength as well as material consistency. You may want to read up on it at their website.
I had the $$, I would buy 1 of each in the Tournament Series. Beautiful looking rods, heard great things about them and if they're better than what I've already got then they must be something special

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I have several Fig Rig rods, and really like them. No problems in 3 years now, everything form a 7 to and 8.5' rods in MH and H. Since I haven't needed customer service, I can only comment on what I know...Kevin Figgins is a great guy and takes care of his customers.
I use other brands too, including some of the new Okuma kick butt models, so I'm not 'married' to Fig Rig, but using them has been a good experience for me. Sue uses her Fig Rig 7'MH almost exclusively. |

Location: Toronto, ON | I have a FigRig Tooth Tamer and a Legend Tourney rod....the Legend is better. Loads much better, very light (most of them are now!) and feels tremendously strong. The fig is okay but doesn't load well frankly.

| Ajohnson, You're talking about the ones with the blue wraps right? The 7'6" MH Muskies Inc edition rods? I've got two of them, and they are by far my favorite for small and medium bucktails, spinnerbaits, and smaller cranks. I used to use the 8'MH Tooth Tamer, loved that rod too, but unfortnately mine got broken in a moment of stupidity. I replaced it with the 8'H Tooth Tamer (Kevin doesn't make the 8' MH anymore) which I like for double 10's and rubber, but it's a bit stiffer than I like; doesn't seem to load up as well on a cast.
Now, as for jerkbait rods... I've got a St Criox 6'9"H Premier that I use almost exclusively. I've also got a Fig Rig 6'10"in the Tooth Tamer series that's comparable in terms of what its used for, but I've never compared them side by side. The St Criox has taken a beating and has held up for three seasons.
One very cool thing about the older Fig Rigs -- the trigger handle on the reel seat has a hole drilled in it to hook a bait through if you want. The newer models have the wire attached to the blank, which lasts about a day before it breaks.
Overall the cork seems to be of a higher quality (and fatter) on the older Fig Rigs than the newer ones. If you hold the front grip, you may want to look closely at the grips on whatever rod you choose. In that repsect I prefer the St Criox over the Fig Rig, but even the St Criox (mine anyway) could be fatter. |
