Posts: 380 Location: Michigan | I have an interest in two different spinnerbait designs and I am wondering how feabible these are? I am not looking to get/make the lead molds or cast my self, but I am wondering if somebody might be able cast and paint these for me. I will do the bending if need be. I would be interested in maybe 10-20 cast/painted forms. I want like a 5/8 or 3/4 ounce lead head with the hook casted in upside dow (i.e with hook gap down. I also want a 5/8 or 3/4 ounce head with a hook with an extra long shank. I don't even know if such a hook even exists??? Can anyone give me an idea if either of these are feasible? Would either be relatively easy or would these be time/labor/cost intensive? Thanks in advance

Posts: 313 Location: On your favorite spot | Intriguing concept - definitely NOT trying to be an A-hole, but wouldn't a downward gap hook quite a few fish in the gills? eh?

Posts: 380 Location: Michigan | The reason I am thinking about these two different styles is I will be traveling to a pike fishery which is 100% C&R, barbless, and a single hook allowed on a bait. With most traditional spinnerbait designs, hooking percentages (and staying hooked) are not what I would like them to be. A buddy and I did a little brain storming and thought of the two different design approaches. With the extra long hook model, I would also lke to have a shorter arm. Esentially trying to expose the hook as much as possible by dropping it back and away from the blade. You raise an interesting point/question about the hook down design. Definately don't want to hurt the fish...

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Here's a design that I've wanted to make for 20 years but have never taken the time... If you can find someone to pour the heads the best hooking option IMO would be to replace the hook with a double looped piece of wire (one end hooks to the arm, as a hook would and the other extends out of the head where the hook would). Then you could attach a Siwash hook to the loop and shrinktube it straight to stay in line with the arm. I'm guessing you would have one bad a$$ hooking spinnerbait. There was something like this on the market years ago in the bass world but if I remember right it was a hook crimped to stranded wire. Feel free to steal my design just send me a few. Posts: 97 Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan | So basically replace the hook with something like in the picture and then putting a hook, connected by an O'ring and straightened with shrink tubing, on the back end? Posts: 358 Location: London, England | Just had a look at their webpage. The single hook on the Llungen nutbuster and their other bladed spinnerbaits is a removable (replaceable) siwash hook which is set back compared to a conventional spinnerbait. If you wanted to try the hook upside down presumably you could easily turn it over to try out. You might be able to replace the hook with an even longer shanked one too if you wanted?

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Tim Kelly - 1/17/2008 2:26 AM Doesn't the Llungen spinnerbait have a design something like that? I just looked and it does look that way. I never really looked closely at those and just assumed they were an embedded hook. Dockboy - I was thinking just a piece of .062 wire. I guess if you put a coil that was poured in the lead you could just extend the wire used for the arm through the head to hang the hook on.

Posts: 2270 Location: SE, WI. | Chad; There is no problem building what you want . Just do not cast hook in the head. Leave excess wire on back end and wrap hook with excess wire and shrink tube. I have bullet heads in that size, swimmer heads in 3/4oz, all my other molds are in excess of 1 oz. I use a salmon hook. They penetrate instantly. I've been building my own spinnerbaits for years. I do not like marketed spinnerbaits because I feel lead casted hooks give the spinnerbait rigidy and help fish get leverage to throw bait. Good luck with that! Hope this helps! P.M me if you need help. JIM
