I finally finished reading the almost 1400 pages of Larry's 3rd edition compendium and wanted to say how impressed I was with his latest effort.

I can easily see these two new shiny volumes becoming completely dog-eared and taped together like my original copy of his first edition. When I showed that copy to Larry recently, there was an instant sparkle in his eyes knowing how much enjoyment I had derived from it. His comment was "looks like you got your money's worth"... indeed! I must've read "Big George" 20 or 30 times, and I was glad to see it's included in the new edition... and yes, I had to read it once again for old times sake.

If you're not into reading, just the pictures from the "50 pound club" and others are simply amazing, the thoughts of catching such a beast is what keeps this Muskie addict going. Anyway, I'm sure he will be at the various muskie shows and I wholeheartedly recommend picking them up to help combat this winter's Cabin fever... nice job Larry!

Where do you get it?

I sent a pic or two to Larry. Just wondering if one of them made the book.

Jerry: Thanks for the kind words, ditto Steve.

Mike: Yes your pic made the book, thanks. As did Sorno, Lee Tauchen and many, many others.

As noted, I will be at the MI TC chapter meeting Jan. 8, as well as the Chicago Musky Show Jan. 11-13, the Milwaukee Musky Show in Feb. and the Minnesota Muskie Expo in March and the Duluth chapter of MI meeting March 11. I will be working in Pastika's booth at all three Muskie shows. I will have books along.

For those not going to the shows or don't wish to wait, go to my web site: http://www.larryramsell.com

Click on the link at the top LH corner of my home page and go from there.

I have been getting a lot of good feed back, so I guess my 4 1/2 months of 15 hours a day, seven days a week were worthwhile...it was truly a "labor of love".

As Jerry noted, there are LOTS of pages to read in the two volumes, but there are also over 700 photographs to look at for those that don't like to read much. Volume I covers world records beginning in the 1800's, including the "truth" about the record wars of the past decade and a half and Volume II covers everything else.

Also for those that like muskie history and don't like to read, I hope to come out in the next few months with a Muskellunge Post Card book...little reading and lots of OLD muskie card/photographs...never dreamed there were so many (over 650) and they tell a historical story that can't be gotten elsewhere.

Merry Christmas and...

Muskie regards,
Larry Ramsell

I've been curled up by a fire lately reviewing some of the details in volume I... simply fascinating stuff!

While my main interest is the world record sections... something that has always really piqued my interest was the Malo muskie. I thought Larry did a great job of providing all the facts in this volume so the reader could make his own decision. I admit having always questioning the validity of that fish even before reading some of these revelations from the new compendium.

Well, considering all the evidence presented, I find it difficult to give the near 70 pound weight of this fish much -if any- credibility. If anything... it appears to me to be some type of clumsy follow-up to Mr. Spray's 1949 world record/taxidermy shenanigans. (Larry was kind enough to alluded to some hearsay Malo interviews too, a story in itself).

I thought this singular direct observation made by the taxidermist who remounted the fish exposed the mount for what it is... "the skin had not been pulled together on the back side of the mount". If anything we now know that these type of mount enhancements were nothing new, even way back then.

If you couple that with the admission and reversal of testimony from the original taxidermist of record, (George Flaim) "... (fish) looked dead a couple of days, all dried out. The skin was cracked. It could have even been in a freezer for a while improperly wrapped...!"

That interview was conducted by a reporter in the 80s and closed the Malo case for me considering he had originally stated the muskie was brought to him fresh, and it's gills were still moving.

I was fortunate to spend a few hours in the boat with Larry this Fall and it was truly an honor. The latest compendium is amazing. I've never seen so much muskie info packed between pages. Thanks again Larry and we'll see ya' in the TC's next week. Steve
