I built a couple topwaters the other day but decided to try different sealer and wood combinations to see what would happen. I used a basswood blank and sanding sealer instead of the KILZ. I have read numerous reports on here of people using the sanding sealer with good results, and I was eager to try it out. The sealer was easy to use. I actually soaked the blank in the gallon container for about an hour then hung to dry. The primer and automotive paint seem to adhere very well. I finished it off with an automotive clear coat. I tested the bait for about 15 minutes in the water and brought it in to dry. The wood must have swelled, because when I came back later in the day there were big cracks through the paint and clear, exposing the wood underneath the paint!!

Has anyone else every had this problem with the sanding sealer? Does it just not work well with the basswood?? Did I not soak it long enough? never had this problem before and I can always go back to the kilz but I did like the ease of using the sanding sealer.

I had the same problem with sanding sealer. I started off with dipping in the sealer and had some cracking problems. I thought I could solve this by soaking in the sealer. My problems got worse. I switched to Kilz and have not had a problem.

hi. basss wood is not the best wood. heres my deal.
lacqyuer sand seal.
lacquer prime. lacquer paints or createx.
enviro clear coat.
all baits are dipped in sealer and primer.
automotive clears are not great for wood. they have no give,,,too brittle. also shape and predrill all holes before sealing.

You can use basswood, pre-drill everything first, best sealing method is 2 coats of epoxy, sanding inbetween coats, spray base primer, paint colors, then clear with favorite clear coat.

If you are putting several heavy coats on such as dipping let paint dry 24 hours before clearing, will help a lot.
I use auto clear on ALL wood and plastic baits and seldom have a problem. It does have give to an extent or it would constantly crack on autos as metal expands when warmed.

I had nothing but problems with basswood. It's very soft and expands and contracts a lot. If you're not using the right sealer and paint you could be heading for trouble. Try something stronger like Cedar.

Thanks for all the feeback guys. We have other processes currently that work very well, including KILz and a urethane base, but were experiementing with different products. I had always wanted to try the sanding sealer because it seems alot of people swear by the stuff and when it didn't work, I wondered what the deal was. Thanksn again, Laird
