Looking to book a trip for this coming summer, looking for some suggestions on lakes and resorts or guides on various lakes. I live in Forest Lake MN so would be willing to travel anywhere in the immediate area (within 10 hours). I am planning on looking at the Expo and talking to some folks but would like to have it narrowed down a little by then. Thanks for the help.

Posts: 1061 Location: Medford, WI | dog, Are you looking for a trophy fish lake or just getting into muskies and want lots of action? I spend a week up in Canada fishing LOTW (Nestor Falls area) and Crow Lake. Between the two, you should be able to get lots of action and move some nice fish. A buddy and I went to Mille Lacs at the end of this summer for 3 days. We didn't really know anything about the lake, but by the second day we were moving fish pretty good. We caught some nice northerns, but didn't hook up with any muskies. However, the quality of the fish we had follow was great and I will be back there this summer for at least one trip. I spend most of my fishing time in northern Wisconsin, which offers the option of driving 5 minutes from one lake to another one. If you specify what you're targeting (numbers, size, or both), I'm sure a lot more guys will have an opinion and will give you some ideas. Hope it goes well wherever you end up, Jake Bucki

Posts: 2024 | If you're willing to travel within 10 hours I think you'd be wise to visit Lake of the Woods. Personally, I like it because of the sheer diversity of structure/cover to fish, action, and a shot at a true monster WITHOUT having to deal with an insane number of boats. It's super peaceful up there, too. Awesome when you want to "get away." Like Jake said, if you are more specific in what you want we can help you narrow your search down better.

I was actually thinking about Lake of the Woods, my questions are this: Canadian side or MN side, and guide recommendations.

Posts: 2024 | Every resort has guides, some better known than others (Johnson, Pearson?). Canadian side has more structure to fish. I don't have a map in front of me, but if I remember correctly the MN side has more open water. Every region holds fish: Northwest, Kenora, Big Narrows, Sabaskong. Resort rates, guides, boats, and other amenities at the resorts are what should be the final deciding factor as, again, there are fish everywhere so finding them should not be a problem. Good luck!

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I would agree with Sean on this...Lake of the woods is a beautiful big body of water that has fish galore in many places. Although the last two years I have seen more boats in the Sabaskong bay area, there are still multiple places to go find fish and get away from other boats. Many many many secondary spots that don't get hit and are true gems up there. Wife's fish from last year came off of just such a spot (I got a hook in a finger as well...%^%^ fish!!). Check out Sabaskong Bay Lodge... Wife and I have been going there for 6 years now, and have just "upped" our stay to a full week July 7th through the 14th.. Steve
