Has anyone crafted any lures from exotic woods? I recently purchased some Ekki , Purpleheart and Jatoba. I was told the Ekki doesn't requie any weighting. I was thinking of just fine sanding and clearcoating.

I love the way that top lure looks. You can't get more natural looking then wood color. I've never done any multie wood lures but I have had very good luck using wood baits I made that I didn't paint. Just cleared them and went to the lake.

They look real cool!! there is a problem with combining different woods though. All wood types move differently under water meaning they expand and contract at different rates. Many guys have found this out with rock Maple how it reacts so violently to temperature and pressure change causing entire paint jobs to explode. You could put a wood that expands rapidly into a wood that is stable and split the whole bait. I use Michigan Cherry and red Oak with no Problems and Western Red and eastern White Cedars also with no problems. I tried Rock Maple and the entire lure split as soon as the bait reached 22 feet. I have stayed away from Maple for this reason.

Your combinations would make great folk art and could bring more money than production fishing lures. The woods are truly beautiful the way you have them put together. Very nice works of art. If you are going to be in Chicago for the show I would love to see one up close. Maybe trade for one of my customs. I would add it to my collection of one of kind unique lures. You have a trully collectable lure there my friend. Make sure you sign and date them , Kingfisher
