Posts: 726 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Very cool suggestions, I'm taking notes. Here are a couple that probably not many have heard of: 'Dahl Sheep Trails' or 'Mountain Goat Challenge' both by Ace Sommerfeld. Just plain entertaining stories about hunting in Alaska whether with rifle or camera. Ace is a great photographer too. These aren't "how to" books although you do learn along the way. These are tales of the hunt from the perspective of a novice turned expert through hard knocks. You can read one in a night or two. Ace lives in Eau Claire and belongs our local M.I. chapter. I've never been to Alaska so I wasn't sure how appealing I'd find them. Now, I want to go. Thanks Ace just one more thing added to the "to do" wish list. Also: 'Truck' or 'Population 485' by Mike Perry. Awesome reads about all sorts of life's facets. Perry is a New Auburn, WI native. These books are creative non fiction. Posts: 2024 | This is probably one of the best threads on this site! This is also timely for me as next semester I'm heading off to study abroad and need some good reads. "The Road" I picked up the other day and after reading the comments on this thread can't wait to pick it up. Some other really good fiction novels, anything by Louise Erdrich gets my vote. I'm surprised "Double Whammy" by Carl Hiassen hasn't been mentioned yet. REALLY FUN READ for fishermen (murders, cheating bass fishermen, good stuff). If you haven't seen the movie yet, I highly recommend John Krakauer's (sp?) "Into the Wild" recently made into a movie by Sean Penn. Terrific read for all ages. Thought provoking. Makes you reflect on the TRULY important things in life. If I think of some more I will post again. Keep em coming guys!

| I know this sound weird, but a few years ago I become a "Parrothead." If you need a defintion that is someone who is a Jimmy Buffett fan. That said, he is one of 6 authors to have a number 1 on the New York Times best sellers list in fiction and also non fiction. If you love the Caribbean, beaches, tiki bars, sea planes and colorful characters then check out these two. A Salty Piece of Land Where is Joe Merchant If you want to read about an amazing individual then check out this one. A Pirate Looks at Fifty All are written by Jimmy Buffett and are great reads. He does have a VERY unique writing style that took some getting used to, but now I enjoy it. John | |||

John Don't forget "Tales from Margaritaville" - it's a collection of short stories- probably a bit easier of a read to get used to Buffett fiction... A Pirate Looks at Fifty is a great read - That was the book I was reading during my first musky trip (and my first trip to Minoqua/Northwoods!). And don't forget, Jimmy is a fisherman too! Other reads that have been mentioned and I agree with: Time on the Water - Gardner (I'm reading it for the 3rd time this year) Don't fish Angry - Jackson (Fun to hear fishing from a guide's perspective) Just b/c it's a cool hardcover book - Northern Pike and Muskies - Freshwater Fishing Library

Posts: 401 | I know it has been said but John Sandford and his prey series are good books. They take place all over Minnesota. I usually sit down on a nice day to myself and read the entire book in a sitting. Lucas Davenport is one tough cop. Enjoy the series. I recommend reading them in order. http://www.johnsandford.org/index-books.html And yes Baldy.....I can read without pictures. Keith Edited by Professional Edge 12/5/2007 7:45 PM
