I live in Brainerd, Minnesota. We have a Gander Mountain store here. Recently they bought out the Reeds Sporting Goods inventory from the Reeds store in Baxter. Anyway, I went into Gander today looking for a long nose pliers for removing hooks. Well, of course I have to brouse a little. I come across a rack of rod reel combo's, with 5 combo's left on the rack. All were musky rods and reels. Well, there was a 7'6" Diamonback with a Abu Garcia 6500 Trophy reel on it, plus the reel was already spooled with braided line! I looked for the price stickers and all that was on them was a price sticker on the rod handles. I asked the young man in that department if they were new or used and if price was for the combo, or just the rod? He says they are new and price is for everything. He said that they are inventory from Reeds and they are just getting rid of them. Ok so the sticker reads $89.95. From what I have seen the reel goes for that or more usually. I bought it. They have a couple of Fenwick HMX 7' rods with Abu Garcia 6500 C3's for $109.95 left too. Seems tempting.
What do you think ? Good deal or not ?

Thanks
slimm

I think that deal will be a deal that will be gone by the time you go back. The price of that HMX rod alone, I believe, is $109. It won't last long!

Get it! I had a similar deal last year in Minneapolis Gander. I still swear they screwed up as they had teh rods and reels right next to the "combo" for twice the price combined. Plus only one was on the rack. Always find the high school kid who works there that looks like he has better things to do and get him to check you out

I sold a 7'6 HMX last fall for $100 brand new with plastic still on it. I would say that is a deal.

Good deal for sure. I got my 2 HMX's as a pair for $98.

From a different point of view, if you don't need the rods/reels and are ONLY buying b/c the price is low, it's not a deal or a good buy. You're then simply spending money on something b/c the price is low. IMO, you've wasted the entire amount of whatever the price tag is. You can run into "deals", meaning low prices, on lots of things...yarn, Play-Doh, dog biscuits, hay fever medicine, or marbles, but do you want to buy them just b/c there is a "deal" on them? If you have a need for this equipment for some reason, then yes, it's a good deal.

That's not what my wife says, as long as it's on sale or you think the next store will be higher, it's a deal and you need to buy it NOW!
