| What do you use to lube your casting reels? I have searched for the 'magic' lubricant, and do not yet feel I have found it. [:blackeye:] |

Have you tried reel grease from South Bend. It comes in a greyish tube, and is not a petroleum based product. Says it's good for fresh and saltwater reels.
I found it this week at Gander Mt. and lubed my reels yesterday. I'm gonna give it a whirl.

I just started to use this lube called "Rocket Fuel". Its used in casting competitions and other related I read about it on some bassboards. I have lubed my calcutta, Morrums, and 6500's, they all cast great now. Ask SLAMR he tried it.

| I use ATF from the local auto parts store. It costs less than a buck a quart and is specialy designed for high heat and stress bearing applications. It acts just like rocket fuel and makes my 6500's sing. |

| I like the ABU that comes in the 1 ounce bottle, it is different than the small tube that comes with the reels. It seems to br thinner.
I do not see the need for any of the "rocket" oils for musky fishing, you are casting a large bait, these oils are designed for distance casting and using light baits.
I really think oil and bearings are being very over rated. On many of my musky reels I have replaced the bearings with brass bushings. Keep the bushing oiled well and they cast just as far as the bearing and never rust.
One word of caution. Do not over lube your worm gear, and never, never put grease on your worm gear. If your reel came with grease on the level wind strip it off and put light oil on it. I have worked on thousands of reels and find the biggest problem is to much oil on the level wind which atracts dirt and grit which will eat up your pawl and levelwind in a hurry.
If you need to grease the gears, again use it sparingly, to much and it will get in your drags. Also your gears only need a litle grease, all the rest just flys off and gets in places it shouldn't be. |
