| Okay, for the 2nd time now, My plugs looked pretty sooty/oily on my 2005 opti 150. I changed the plugs at 75 hrs., and now at 168 hrs. This time they looked worse than the 1st time! A merc. mechanic said to always run quick clean and fuel stabilizer every time. I did this, but the plugs look worse than my old 50 hp carbed motor. Argh. I spent a fair amt. of time trolling last season, but would always open her up after. Motor ran great except for one time when she stumbled while trolling. No alarms on the smart gauge. Should I be concerned about carbon/crap buildup in the combustion chamber? Is there something else I should be doing? Is there a comb. chamber cleaning product out there? Thanks |

Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | If you troll alot you will get alot of oil and soot on the plugs no matter what.
Seafoam added to the fuel seams to do good for my 200 V Max, and opening it up after trolling also seams to help.

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Agreed...any amount of trolling will definitely increase the amount of carbon everywhere. Sea foam is a good additive to the gas, which will clean the jets, but if it is possible, a good, thorough deep clean using a pressurized "seafoam type" sprayed directly into the system (product like mercury powertune) through a vacuum hose would do wonders..

| Where would you spray the powertune into.? Compressor air intake? |

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I would use the old plugs for the cleaning, and once done, then put in new ones.
I am not extremely familiar with the optimax engine, so as for locating a vaccuum hose, I wouldn't know right off hand. A good place to post your question would be at www.walleyecentral.com They have a VERY active boats and motors section on their forums...guaranteed someone will be able to answer your question directly.

I got a recommendation to switch to full-synthetic 2-stroke oil to reduce carbon deposits and oil fouling. I observed a noticable difference in the plugs with added benefit of less smoke at the exhaust.
Might not make as much difference on a newer FI motor (mines a carb'd '88 Yamaha) but may be worth a try?
If you already use synthetic, maybe try a different brand. |

| Make sure that your motor is getting up to proper temp also. A cold running motor will foul out the plugs quicker then if it is running at the proper temp. Also make sure that you are running the new IZFR5G plugs... |
