I bought the wife a trip to Hawaii for her b-day, ( I could use the vacation as well), mid December around X-mas. We will be staying in Honolulu with my sister, 2 miles from wakiki (sp?) beach.

anyone done any charter fishing there or can point me in the right direction??

thx much.

I went on my honeymoon and chartered out of Maui in 2001. Caught a bunch of Wahoo and yellow fin. The wahoo are like muskies but go 60mph or something.
If the bill's are not running, wahoo are a blast.
I ate a whole plate of fruit and drank a half pot a coffee before I went out. Unfortunitly there were 10 footers that day.

Note to self: Don't ever eat acidic nutrients or drink coffee before going on the ocean. The crew and new wife laughed at me as I turned my head in between pumping the rod to release yucky stuff.

I don't know about Honolulu, but Kona is considered the Marlin capital of the world. Kona is on the backside of the big island and is protected from the 2 large volcanos. Each year, someone gets a grander. I "think" you can get a pretty cheap flight on Hawaiian Air and its only like 30 minutes. Charters are 550-800 or more, depending on how big of boat, length of trip, etc...

Hey Gregger!

We took a charter out of Honolulu years ago. We just went down to the marina in the late afternoon and struck a deal right there.

Some advise:
-The biggest boat isn't necessarily the best riding boat
-talk to the capitian and see what his rules are before you book. Our guy wouldn't let you stand in the boat! I got sick.
-See what's been bitting. You may be in-between seasons and it may not be worth your time.
-get the sea-sickness patches! I've been sick 2x in my life and have a couple years on the water. Hawaii is a windy place pretty much all of the time.
-If you want to keep the fish, be sure to ask the captain if you can. Most of the guys sell their catch to the area restaurants.

Have fun!

Aloha

Muskie treats is right with the fish disperse thing. We let the captain have most of the fish but we kept one yellow fin and had it cooked like five different ways at the marina seafood restaurant for $11.00. I'm not a big sushi guy but man that stuff was unreal. We tipped the Cap & crew and gave them the Wahoo which they made good money on from the restaurants. We hired a private 50 footer and it got rocked by waves. Like MT said I would snoop around a marina and find who is displaying fish specie flags on daily catches when they come to port.

Good luck

I was on Kona a couple years back and fished with Captain Kent on Fish Wish charters. This guy bent over backwards putting me on fish. Just for yucks I brought along my 12 and 14 WT flyrods and had a ball catching small Ahi off the markers.

The biggest secret about Hawaiian fishing is the bonefish!!!! After my charter, we spent the evening soaking squid in the harbor and managed 3 over 10# in just over an hour.

Between the 3 marlin, ahi on the markers and bones my arms were like jelly.

Gregm follow the advise and check the bite. I fished off maui and had not one knockdown and I know several people who fished the Kona Coast with the same result. Although i have heard this year was good. Like musky fishing you need to do your homework and be lucky on the billfish. Also, it will be very unusual if you find a capitan that lets you keep more than a small portion of your catch. the custom there is that they keep that bulk and sell to help offset fuel costs.
