Last weekend I almost got stranded out on a big lake due to my 2004 Johnson 90hp 2-stroke dying on me. It would start at first and as soon as I tried to accelerate it would then die. It then quickly deteriorated into dying a few seconds after starting while just idling, I then started getting an alarm. After many attempts to trouble shoot the basics I had to limp back to the launch with my bow mount. I took my Tuffy to a very reputable dealer and was told the VRO needed to be replaced. I searched this online and it seems there are quite a few horror stories about this being replaced when it wasn't the actual problem. The repair will be $500 so I started to get a little concerned. Just looking for a bit of advice or input about the VRO and how it would relate to what was occuring. Thanks.

MM, here is an article I found for a buddy of mine when his pump started acting up last year. It's pretty informative, check it out. http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html

The Tuffy is back in action. The VRO was literally cracked in half, so I don't feel bad about second guessing what the problem was. Jerry at Amherst Marine has never seen one do this.

it is a very common problems with evinrude and johnsons going back to the early 90's maybe before. If it happens again u can prime the bulb to get you to the landing. Never heard of it breaking in half. Good luck

Actually it is NOT a common problem. There were problems with the early models of the VRO pump back in the mid 80's to early 90's. When they re-engineered the product, there were few problems.

Will there be issues with these? Yes...it's a mechanical item and after time, something will give. In some cases it happens fast, and in others it takes years.

If it broke in half, that almost sounds like the part was over-torqued where it mounts... That shouldn't happen, but depending on use, it can take a pounding too. Too many variables to call it a defect, nor am I trying to put blame on the owner either...sometimes things just happen... It's something we all have to accept.

If it's up and going, good deal!! More fishing to be had.

I know the 1984's were bad. I blew my dad's 90 and his friends 150 went too.
