I am seeking information and fishing advice re: turnover on Lake Vermilion.
Hoping someone with specific current experience will be able to help.
Where is the turnover phase and/or prediction?
Fish known spots very throughly? Find baitfish - where? Fish transition areas from sand to rock? Fish steep breaks? Or all of the above and in between...

Was on vermilion today, She's Turning for sure..... SO....I'd look for a city lake to fish the next week or so

I'm headed to KY. for work for the next two mo. 2hrs. from Cave Run....Now to figure out how to get my boat there......But the best Vermilion has to offer is right before Ice up.

What to do???? Maybe both.!!

Just got back from Vermillion yesterday. Fished Thursday thru Sat afternoon. I am not sure if the Big V was turning or not???? It was my first time ever to the lake. We took off from the landing at about 9 a.m on Thursday in the pouring rain and a strong East wind. Fishing conditions were tough, big rollers, rain and the fish weren't moving. At 1:30 right before moon rise things changed. We had 2 hot fish follow from the same island (Birch), but could get them to committ.

Raised those fish several times, but no dice. Hit Cherry Island at about 3:00 and nailed a 51" on my 5th cast. It completely inhaled a pounder bulldawg (all white). Had to cut all the hooks on it so I could safely return the big girl to the water.

Friday the weather was even worse than Thursday. There was a little less rain, but the winds switched to the Northwest and they were HOWLING!!!!! I have never been in waves that big, including trips to Mille Lacs, borderline stupidity by my buddies and me. When we were willing to risk our lives in the Huge waves crashing into the rocky islands, fish were moving. My buddy boated a small 36" first thing in the morning around 10:00 when we got out there. Again (Birch Island) we moved two other PIGS on that island in the first hour of the morning.

Found another large muskie that was hot on the Northside of Ely Island but no takers. All fish we saw friday were in the HUGE ROLLERS pounding into the islands. If you tried to get out of the wind you didn't see any fish.

Saturday was a nice day, low winds, warm and fishing sucked, only moved one fish before we had to leave.

For anyone heading up there I would recommend fishing shallow wind blown rock. We saw lots of nice fish in less than 8 feet of water on windblown rocky shorelines. Also, big rubber was the ticket in either all white or ciscoe colors.

All in all we only boated 2 fish but I got my first 50 so to me it was a trip well worth it. Good luck to the rest of you this weekend. I hear there are a lot of people heading up there for the full moon. Stick a pig!

Nice report Tony, thank you. I liked the virtual fishing trip you gave. Funny thing is I mostly fish with a white bulldawg and risk life with the heavy winds so it was like I was there with you. Do you remember any water temps, any ciscos spawning yet?

Looks like a clipped fish. Nice one. Say isn't that Arrowhead reef in the background...

Nope caught off of Cherry Island, pretty much just abyss in the background. It is the East end of the lake, but not far enough east to be Arrowhead Reef. It was so rough that since it was my first time to the lake I didn't try to fish the Arrowhead area since the buoys were out.

Awesome fish Tony. Here's another 51 that came off the same lake on the same day. A little further east of you though.

Big thanks to Steve Miljat for showing my dad and I around vermillion for a day and giving my dad a chance at this fish.

Fishing on our own I got a chunky 46.5 the day after, but nothing else worthy of a picture next my Dad's and Tony's fish.

I also need to thank my go to netman Mike! It wasn't the prettiest of net jobs, but he got the job done and I am glad that he didn't go overboard in the big waves trying to net it for me!

He also makes some pretty good lures too! check out micmac lures

Nice job Tony!

Your right about the wind on Big Bay, it can toss you into the shore real quick if your not paying attention.

I'm glad you had the chance to experience Vermilion with out the crowds. Again really nice fish.

I hope to be back up there before ice up to catch her fat arss sister .
