My 40hp Evinrude doesn't want to idle at first start the past couple of outtings. I think it is a combination of old gas and Crap gas(10% Ethanol) and haveing my motor sit for a while before I used it.

When I go out this weekend I will mix up some fresh gas. I was thinking about running some Carb/injector Cleaner in the gas to see if that will help. Would this work? Would probably use Lucas Oil Fuel Treatment.

Hiya,

I would suggest getting the OMC motor tuner treatment. on your particular motor, there should be capped end that is threaded like a bicycle tire's air inlet. if you purchase the OMC treatment, it will screw directly to that, and you inject it directly in as a treatment to the whole combustion chamber, carb jets, etc. Really does a great job.

Then, when you are done taking the motor out for a spin to clean all the gunk out and burn all the white smoke you create from the cleaning, replace your spark plugs.

If at this time the motor is still not running well, grab a timing light, and check the timing. On that motor, at warm idle (800 rpm), it should be at 0 TDC on the upper piston. If it is not, adjust it. Pretty simple to do...just follow the linkage to one of the screw on ball-joint ends. Unhook, make a turn in the correct direction (base this upon which way the timing needs to go), rehook and check timing. If you get it to 0, it should purr like a kitten.

It may be just a little carb tuning as well....

Easy motor to work on...had one for 5 years or so before I upgraded. Loved that motor.

Had that problem a couple of weeks ago. Got that engine tune and new plugs, works like a champ. If you don't have the threaded valve, order one and install it, it is cheap and easy to install and it is much easier than spraying the engine tune.

Another good alternative is to run a shock treatment of BRP Carbon Gaurd along with BRP 2+4 in your gas. Use the recommended amount of 2+4 but double the Carbon Gaurd. This may help with any issues of gummed carbs. Spraying the treatment in the maintance valve does not help with the carbs at all, just the combustion chamber.

Once you get it running well, be sure to ALWAYS run these to additaves at the recommend rates and say good-bye to fuel issues. (unless you get some water in your gas)
