Location: big cove tannery pa | I recently purchased an abu ambassadeur 6501c4 highspeed reel and was wondering if it should be so hard too reel in or not. I mean the simplest little lure is like reeling in 2 double 10's. Is this normal for this reel or is there something wrong with it.
thank you

| the "high speed" part of the name refers to the gear ratio/retrieve rate.
for every crank of the handle, the C4 with a 6.3:1 ratio picks up more line than a similar crank of the handle of a reel like a C3 with a lower 5.3:1 gear ratio.
when a lure comes in faster, there's more resistance from the water, thus the hard-pulling feel you're getting.
as suggested, try it out on jerkbaits, walk-the-dog topwaters, etc where the high speed is great for quickly picking up slack line. it's also a great option for burning bucktails with smaller blades that don't offer as much resistance.

| Higher speed = less torque. |

Location: Madtown, WI | It shouldn't be that tough to reel in. I use a 5500 high speed for regular bucktails and do not notice a significant difference, yes its tougher but by all means it doesn't cause any fatigue unless your trying to go mach speed. I would first check to see if there is any gunk on the worm gear casing or loosen up the cast control, then I would do a full strip down clean and relube to see if this helps anything. It's tough to say though without feeling just how much resistance you're getting.

| 5500's had eother a 5.3 or if it is older a 4.7 gear ratio. At the time they were made 4.7 was a high gear ratio. |
