Last year a few of my reels drags would slip even though I had the star wheel cranked down. I replaced the drag washers with Smoothies, thinking that was the problem, but apparently not. Any advice on where to look to solve this problem. On my C4, I can pull line out with the star wheel cranked as tight as I can get it.

Thanks,

Dave

Are you sure the drag is slipping and not the line slipping on your spool?

Dave, you didn't oil the drag washers did you?

You have oil on the drag washers. Easy fix. Take it apart and dry them off with a soft towel. Be careful when oiling on that shaft the drag is on. If this doesn't do it, the line is slipping on the spool. Put about fifty feet of mono first then tie super line on to that. It is one of these two reasons. I would bet the first.

or it could be that the 5131 washers have been flatted out, not being able to apply pressure to the drag washer. This happens when you don't back off the drag at the end of an outing.

Just replace them with the newer carbontex washers that you can get from Abu or Smooth Drag.....they blow away the previous Abu washers or Smoothies, for that matter. They are also not as affected by oil and grease as the older type of washers.....they're basically made of the same material as Penn's HT-100 drag material which are tried, true and powerful.

Thanks guys, I do have these reels backed with mono, and I was careful not to get any grease/oil on the washers, but I will take them apart and see if some crept in.
