Posts: 12 Location: SAVAGE MN | I am having trouble with my power trim/tilt. I lowered my motor to drain all the water out and now when I go to raise the motor back up nothing happens. I can hear a clicking coming from under the cowling of the motor when I engage the up/down switch. Has anyone run into a similar situation? I do not have the manuals for this motor. Is there a fuse or switch that can go out that would cause the power tilt to not operate? Additionally, can a 50 hp Mariner tiller be raised manually? I’m not much of a mechanic any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave | ||

Posts: 95 Location: LOTW every chance I get | Had the same problem this summer with our '94 50hp Merc. except my dad was way out in the back country and had the motor up to beach the boat. When he got back in, he could not lower the motor. Turns out the wires going down to the lift motor wore off the insulation and shorted on the transom. Melted the red power wire all the way back into the junction box (not sure of the correct name for the electrics box) under the cowl. Replaced the wiring and everythings back to normal. As far as manually lifting the motor, on the Merc there is a screw on the right side of the lift motor, that when loosened, allows you to manually lift the motor. You then tighten the screw to hold that position. Hope this helps, Dave | ||

Posts: 5874 | If you are just hearing a clicking sound, I bet the relay contacts are bad. There should be two relays under the cowl. Swap them around, and you should be able to raise the motor. Then replace them both. Most dealers will stock these relays. | ||

Sawbones, I will take another look after work, but with the motor all the way down I am afraid the screw is going to be hard to get at. Shep, thanks for the idea of switching them around, I pulled the relays last night but did not try to switch them or even clean them. This is a great resource site because of members like the both of you so willing to offer an opinion or solution to a problem you can't see. I will be working on it again tonight and I will post with an update. Thanks again, Dave | ||

Posts: 177 Location: Cohasset, MN | I don't know if a 1990 Johnson 150 is analogous but I had the same problem 2 years ago. I bought an aftermarket service manual and after going through their troubleshooting suggestions I found it was my trim pump motor not spinning in one direction (the relays reverse the polarity depending on what direction you're trimming the motor). | ||

Posts: 5874 | These are sealed relays, so you won't be able to clean them. I would suggest replacing both, and keeping the good one for a spare. | ||

Posts: 400 Location: North/Central WI | Did the trim/tilt sound weak before this happened? If so, the T/T motor itself might be shot. I have a '91 Mariner Magnum 40hp that the T/T sounded weak but always worked. One day it just stopped working and all I heard was a clicking noise when I pushed the T/T button. Turns out the T/T motor needed to be replaced or repaired. It is basically impossible to find a replacement motor or parts. I had to take it to a electric motor repair shop and have the armiture rewound and new brushes custom made. It ended up costing about $250. If this sounds similar to your problem, PM me and I can probably help you get it fixed. | ||

Posts: 17 | there is a screw on the side of the tilt/trim motor resiviour. give it a few turns and you can raise or lower the outboard. tighten the screw and you are good to go.............tom | ||
