The new 7000HSN reel has a knob on the spool for line. Do I tie braided line to this or do I need to still use mono backing before tieing on braided line?

You could do either one but I would prefer to run backing on the reel if for no other reason than to fill the spool up some so you don't need 200yds. of super line to fill the reel up.

That is what I thought thank you for responding. It would take a lot of superbraid to fill this reel. I use 80 lb but still has a 18 lb diameter

With the new style of lever engaging the reel, do you know if I need to manually switch the lever after casting a bait, or can I just crank on the handle to engage the reel?

Just start cranking! The reel will engage just like a push button. As for the lever when I first saw them I didn't think I would like it as it seemed ackward but once I put one on a rod and started using it I find I like it much better than a push buttom.

reelman, do you find that sometimes you can't throw the lever and have to move the spool slightly to be able to disengage the reel for casting? Seems to happen a bit with my 7001i. Other than that I don't mind the lever over the button as much as I thought I might.

Tim,

That happens on my 7000 about 1 out of 15 casts or so. Not sure why or if there's a fix for it.

I was told the opposite by Thorne Bros....he told me to manually switch the lever back as it will save the spring from wearing out. Don't know if its true, just what I was told.

Probably true, but did he tell you not to wind the handle either as that will wear out the gears eventually! It's a reel, use it and when it eventually wears out terminally buy a new one - nothing's for ever!

Tried out the new 7000hsn sunday and mainly tossed grinder spinnerbaits in and around thick weed cover. It worked great but the lever does sometimes not disengage when trying to cast the bait or when starting the figure eight. Was a bit frustrating for a brand new reel. I had to move the handle or spool to get it in the right position to disengage the spool. This would suck if a 50" or any hot musky would slam a bait boat side. Sometimes when I was casting I was visioning my rod being flung out of my hands and sinking to the bottom of the lake, I really needed to be sure that spool was disengaged!!

Another point about sunday, I would both manually flip the lever and crank the handle to engage the spool, didn't seem to make a difference. I ended up cranking the handle more though because this is how all other baitcasters function. I'm used to that like tying shoe laces you know. I can see thorne bros saying do it manually because of the spring, but I think most reels have similar internals, some break sooner than others, depends on how their used or abused.

Mine does the exact same things. After a few of those 'short stop' casts, the reel grinds and is nowhere near as smooth as outta the box. That short stopping happens a few times a day at least. I blew the clicker out of it last weeknd also.

I don't think that is acceptable at all, seeing reports on here with others having the same problem makes me think it is a defect from the factory. I *was* considering getting one but now am not so sure. Problem is, while the rod market is on the ball, I think the reel market still needs to play catch-up and give us some options in this class of reel.
