Posts: 89 | Can anyone tell me how this lure should be worked? I've been casting it and treating it like a jerkbait with moderate rod swings except it doesn't loook that good on the retrieve, but, I did get my first follow on it. Also would like to know what type of leader would work best. Thank you

Posts: 1310 Location: Washington, PA | A heavy jerk bait leader works best for me. Two ways I use the sledge are to "pick apart" a weed bed, or troll them. Caught fish doing both.

Posts: 199 Location: Sandusky, OH | I have a batch of the new ones, and I really like them. Paint is good on them, and all mine run real well. I've found that working an unweighted sledge requires you to axcelerate through the pull, gaining speed as the rod drops. I still have days that I can't keep them from popping back up, so I'm going to try adding a little weight to the front of the bait to see if that helps (large Gamikatsu hook first, then maybe wrapping with some sodder). I use a St Croix Premier 6'9" H and a 5600 C4, if that helps. Eric

Posts: 392 Location: KY | I have tried the small one unweighted and the big one with and w/o added weight. You really have to stay after the small one to keep it down. It does troll well though. The big one unweighted is the bomb. With a longer rod and the right pulls I can get it to move side to side nicely. I have not been able to get the same action from the larger one with weight. It is more of a straight line up down action. They all are very buoyant and need to be worked quickly. They also cast great into a wind.

Location: Athens, Ohio | I like the unweighted ones. I use a thin wire leader and a C-4 (fast) reel with a stiff rod. Three, four fast cranks of the handle to pull the bait under water, then a pull from the pole. Let it float about half way up and rip it again, it will walk the dog. Those rattles are the key, keep them shakin. I have not tried the new sledges yet but it looks like Sledgehammer has some awesome new color schemes. It will work you to death, but you'll have fish. For the best advise, e-mail or PM Mauser on this site, he's the Sledge Perfect Master. m

Posts: 89 | Very helpful. I have the unweighted big daddy. Orange and black. Think there's a couple rattles in there. The first follow I got on it, I was splashing the rod tip in the water to make it move good in the water. When I got the bait to the boat, did a figure 8, and there was a little 30 incher who came up to check it out. little rascal... Edited by B.Mirro 8/22/2007 8:10 AM
