I heard tuff shads are not made anymore. Is this true or just a rumor?

Just a rumor. You can order them direct from the maker. http://tuffshad.tripod.com/ I have heard they are no longer made from wood though. All baits are now plastic. This can be confirmed on the message board at the link provided.

Do they work as well as the wood ones?

The plastic tuffs seem to work as well as the mahogony for me. Maybe not better, but definetely no worse.
