How deep can muskies suspend? I have been noticing numerous fish marked at about 60 fow in about 80 fow.

those could be some big pike lurking in the cooler water temps

About 30 years ago, we caught a musky while row trolling Trout Lake (Vilas Co., WI) for lakers. It hit a #9 Rapala down 65' over about 80 feet of water.

But my personal experiance since then is that the ones you see suspended at 15-20' are the ones that will eat.

I'm still learning the suspended game. Are you guys running baits 15-20' down? or over their heads?

the biggest mistake is to run underneath them, try running above their heads....they'll come up at hit it especially in clearer water

I caught fish 40' down in the fall. During the summer they are normally suspended near the thermocline depending on the lake normally 12 to 25' down you can see it on a locator turn up your sensitivity and you will see a distinct line and most likely the hook will be just above that depth. I know a guy who caught fish at Georgian Bay 60 or 70' down over 100 to 200 but he did alot better on shallow reefs.

I have caught pike 70' down over 90fow. I don't recommend you target fish that deep unless you are going to keep them. There is a good chance that rapid ascent from those depths is going to hurt or kill the fish.

Truth be told, I've been walleye fishing rather than muskies this year. Making my own spinner rigs and all. We've done great targeting fish suspended just above the thermo, which is right about 16' right now. The fish are quite a distance from any structure like drops or flats. I guess they're following baitfish. Anyway, they're biters.

i would assume for the most part that the bulk of the fish won't be really active at below 20-25 feet considering that is where your higher concentrations of dissolved oxygen is, but at the same time i do know of some fish way north that do sit in extrememly deep water and are supposed to be pretty big. take the ottawa river fish as an example.

Mid summer Pelican Lake, Oneida County WI pattern...

Boat in 20, pitching to the 17 to 18' breakline on the main lake basin. the fish will be at 12 even with the primary break on the stones. I have had multiple fish days doing this, pitching Creatures. Soft plastic like Suzy Sucker will suffice.
