Posts: 38 | If you could live on Mille lacs, vermilion, or leech, which one would you choose and why? My family is considering moving from where we currently live to one of these great bodies of water. My dad loves to walleye fish and strictly like to muskie fish. I know they are all great lakes, but i would just like a little more insight and some more info about them from fellow muskie anglers. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joe

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Vermilion,.... Why?? Because there are more big fish (muskie & pike) in that system than you can imagine. plus the dnr just put in 16,700,000 walleye fingerlings this spring AND no pressure in June, Sept.,Oct., Nov. Also it was voted in the top ten most scenic lakes by New Yorker Mag. in the 1940's What a beautiful place to call home. Jerome

| Ideally, I'd buy a place on LOTW. Out of the three lakes you mention, I've only been to Mille Lacs, and wasn't overly impressed. May have just been bad timing, as the fish were only going in one area of the lake. | |||

If you have the money Vermilion is probably for you. Good diverse fishery with beautiful scenery. It is being developed at a very fast pace so during the summer, especially on weekends, it can be very busy with big boats, jet skis, etc. All three lakes have big muskies. Personally if I had the money and was to buy a get away place it would be on some place in Canada like Manitou, LOW, Eagle, etc. Vermilion can be very crowded at times.

Posts: 1767 Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | I guess you can call me a "Vermilion Hater", but I just don't get it..... How is it listed in the top 10 most scenic lakes? It has houses all over the place, and gets more boating traffic then any lake in that region of Minnesota. Can someone please tell me what makes it so much better then any other lake in that area in terms of this "beautiful scenery" I always hear about? I mean you are telling me this lake is more scenic then Rainy or LOTW? I don't think so! here's maybe why I am biased...I have spent 6-7 scattered days on Vermilion. 2 of those days were with one of the top guides on the lake, and the other days were spent with some quality Musky sticks sharing the boat with me. I have yet to boat a Musky, nor has anyone ever in the boat with me caught one either. Finding the fish is easy, and yes, they are enormous. However, they exhibit the most scared behavior I have ever seen from Muskies. At times they seem terrified of your bait. Unless you are talking strictly size, I am not impressed, and if I was going to drive that far North I would definetely put in the extra 2 hours and go to LOTW without hesitation. Just my .02...

| In the 1940's, Vermillion was very scenic. Leech, hands down. How many other great bodies of water are right by Leech? Mille Lacs is way to crowded, Vermillion is at the end of the road. Walker area would offer way more in a place to live than the other two. Besides, nobody fishes Leech anymore. JS | |||

Posts: 638 Location: Bloomington, MN | I agree with Mr. John Skarie. Walker has more to offer than any other of your 3 choices. You are stating to "live" in that area. Either you did well before retirement or you don't need an income, since 99% of the few available jobs up there could barely pay the taxes on a lake home. Lake Mille Lacs and the surrounding area is bottom line..UGLY! It is such a huge body of water that you will need to trail a boat to get safe fishable water at least 20% of the time, same with the east end of Vermillion. I believe a mast majority of people go there for the opportunity to tangle with a huge fish, and not to stay at a nice resort with a northwoodsey feel and safely dine at some fine restaurants.

Posts: 317 | I thought big V was quite scenic and underdeveloped...then again, I'm used to fishing the "sewer" (Fox Chain) in IL, which has more development and watercraft per acre than you can shake a stick at.

Posts: 1767 Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | I found the west end of Vermilion to be better for scenery/traffic and the East end is where we always find the muskies ( the scared muskies)...I have friends that do very well there, they fish it strictly at night.....it's just not my style. I think Walker as a town offers way more then you will get in Cook or Tower. As mentioned above, you will also have a choice of many other lakes to pick from in the area. Leach looked like a beautiful lake from the road, although I'm sure it does get unfishable due to wind at times.

| if you bring the walleye factor into it,,,then Mille lacs,,,,also you would still be only 1 1/2 hr away from the TC area ,,,,Vermillion is nice but what if the Muskie fishing goes sour up there because of VHS or pressure or???? you have no other lakes to choose from close by. Walker/leech area has you in the heart of musky country about 20 some musky lakes relativly close | |||

| My vote would be Mille Lacs, expect I would only fish it on the weekdays and find another hobby during the weekends... Walleye fishing is the best in the state too... | |||

Posts: 324 Location: Waukee, IA | LEECH baby!! Great multi-species lake with trophy potential. Walleyes, crappies, bass, perch, and bluegills are all excellent quality on that lake and fairly easy to get...if you know what you are doing. The average size muskie caught there is HUGE, I think around 46" and it is getting very little pressure thanks to the Big V and the Big Pond of late. Many great lakes to fish around it as well for those REALLY windy days and the size of the fish in those lakes is great as well! Of course, I grew up there so I am SLIGHTLY biased I suppose!! | Mille Lacs-If you want to live in a trailer park? Buy a "Git-R-Done" sticker to go along with the wolf scene in the back window of your pick up truck and maybe get a confederate flag, crank up the Skynard, crack a Miller Light and build a sweet jump for your golf cart and you'll be just fine in the heart of Mintucky....oh and learn to love the sound of double 10's at night. Walleye and smallie fishing is awesome! Vermillion-If you can afford it, buy a quaint northwoods lake cabin on the V then smash it to the ground and build a huge mansion. Fuel up the ski boat baby!!! Leech-That's still a lake?

Location: Athens, Ohio | Y'all treadin pretty close to home there, fellas! We calls them kinda folks 'well-to-do' around here. If it was me, I'd move to Minneapolis. Hour or two drive to Lacs, weekend opportunities driving north, within easy reach of northern Wisconsin, and metro lakes with muskie fishing most of us down here would kill for. Good luck with your decision, I like the approach of using fishing as a locational criteria vs. good schools, property values, and how many junk cars you can fit on the lot (be sure the porch comes pre-equipped with appliances!). m
