Posts: 165 Location: Minnesota | How do you tune a squirrely burt? Mine runs off to the right and I am not sure how to correct it. I have heard people talking about tuning them, but I am still in the dark on how to do it. thanks in advance, dan

Posts: 468 Location: Not where I wanna be! | funny thing, i have the exact same issue with the few that i own. when you say "file the head", could you go a little more in depth than that?? sides? top? both? if it is going right, you need to work on the right side of it correct?? You hit a nerve with this one. I had one that I never did get to run and no I dont think you should have to go to the extreme of filing to make a bait run right (not at the prices these bait companies are charging) I have freinds that dont like theirs either. I second the motion to switch to something else.......

Posts: 742 Location: Grand Rapids MN | I hear what you are saying about paying so much for something and then having to spend times (sometimes hours) trying to get it right. The first one I bought was a weight version in the glitter perch; it was perfect right out of the box. Darted left, right, up, down, and just hung there when paused. Many pike and a few 'skies have fallen to this bait but now it's getting a little out of wack and needs tuning. The second one I bought was a shallow version and that thing just shoots to one side and was horrible. If that was my first experience I would have traded/sold the bait asap but since I know what a tuned one runs like, I guess I will just have to put in the time and get them back in shape. They are a great bait but I agree, it's hit or miss with how it runs.

Posts: 5171 | I would leave it, they call me Bert Ramsey.I have some that run to the left right roll or run perfect, guess what they all catch fish.to weight the head I use the plastic weight system like the ole j&b system, then you can change the weights to make lure run deeper.I hope this helps.I also would not change to a hawg seeker, nice bait but after a few fish they are ready for the garbage can.Bill Ramsey

Posts: 39 | Here is what a guy from Drifter Tackle (the mfr of this lure) said when I sent him an email on this topic: I guess we could start with what is considered running right straight out of the box. Each fisherman has his own definition of what running correctly is and what his expectaions of the bait are. The Burt is a pull bait made to be operated on a tight line. You pull it, it rises, you pull it , it rises etc. Your not going to get a alot of side to side motion nor is it going to glide. Depending on which model you have weighted or unweighted the cadence and speed at which the bait has to be worked will vary. The unweighted is very buoyant runs shallow and rises very quickly, therefore a faster retrieve with short quick pulls are required to make the bait operate properly. The weighted model on the other hand suspends and rises much slower and can be worked much slower with longer pulls. Lastly we find often times fisherman that are unfamiliar with the bait oftern make the mistake of giving the Burt a large swift pull upon entry to the water before allowing the bait to center or rudder itself. Again short, medium pulls to get the bait starterd swimming are best. That being said I guess we would need to know in more detail the types of trouble your having with the baits. What is it exactly that they are or are not doing. If you would like to send the baits back to us, we'll look at them, if there is something wrong with them and they do not perform correctly as you say we'll replace them with new. Concerning the feedback you received on the forum you attended I will try to be as politically correct as possible. First and foremost the advice you received to file, modify etc. the nose is not accurate and does not work. This was an old recommendation that the previous owners of Musky Mania printed and use to accompany each bait. It does not work and has little effect in modifying the performance or behavior of the bait. These baits are no different than any other, adjusting the line attachement eye right or left of center remains the most effective corrective measure to changing or altering how the bait swims. Web forums obviously can be a source of information, unfortunately they are usually attended by the same small group, (much like the table full of old men at the local diner that meet every morning to solve the worlds problems and accomplish little). Often times these forums turn into nothing more than a platform that becomes a feeding frenzy of critisicism and negative remarks against individuals or products that have no merit. Not sure why, I guess maybe it makes the individuals feel better about themselves. Your case in point, you indicated you had 15 individuals all in the same forum on the same day that had the exact same problem, that's amazing we don't get 15 people that contact us all year long concerning a problem with the Burt. We sell alot of Burts have tons of customers who love them and give testimonials to their success. The ratio of complaints to number of Burts we sell is minimal. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, however I can tell you the Burts continue to sell and catch fish year in and year out. They wouldn't if it were a dud.

Posts: 1237 Location: South Portsmouth, KY | Well, i have an older burt and the filing corrected my problem. Maybe the new ones are different but that is a strong reply from that guy.

Posts: 468 Location: Not where I wanna be! | send him a link to this forum and he can see for himself. i do like the bait, and i will continue to use them, but the burts i own do run to the right....not up and down like they should! either way, i guess a musky wont care, but i do. and confidence is a large part of this game

Posts: 742 Location: Grand Rapids MN | I agree pretty strong/opinionated reply from a company rep. I do agree that most might have the misconception of this being a glide bait or similar to. I had many friends that thought this bait looked stupid. I remember thinking that the first time I used a Suick until a 15lb pike ate it on the 3rd cast. When I talk about the bait going left/right, etc that action is similar to how you can get a suick to walk slightly. My floater I tried bending the eye some but just haven't given it the time it deserves. That bait dam near pulls sideways right away so there is some tuning issues. I would agree and send that guy the link so he can see we are just trying to share experiences and information and not a bunch of grumpy old men sitting around complaining.

Posts: 127 Location: Brookfield | Sell it on ebay, thats what I did with mine. I find the unweighted version to be completly useless, but the weighted ones are another topic. NUT

Posts: 39 | I was polite in my emailed reply (but I still think the unweighted ones are junk) I dont think I qualify as a grumpy old man sitting around trying to make myself feel better either (since I am only 39 and I try to have a positive attitude about most things.)
