Going to get my brother a new rod for his birthday. It's going to be a 8' MH just trying to decide which one to go with. I am between the Proedge dmdbck, the Thornebros dmdbck, and the stcrx leged tourn. elite, all in the 8 foot MH model. I know guys are going to tell me to go longer or heavier but I know this is what he wants as far as actions go. Has anyone out there fished these rods side by side or maybe even all three of them?? Don't think I can go wrong either way just want to see what you guys think? Thanks.

I can't say i can compare the other two but its hard to believe you could get any happier with the other two than I am with My
Thorne Bros diamondback. Its just plain incredible.

I am sure you are going to run into a whole bunch of brand loyalty on this one, I love my 8' St. Croix Legend Tournament. I have never thrown the others, but the 8'Legend is the sweetest rod I have ever thrown.

the st croix comes in third IMHO...if you need a deciding point compare warrantys,

personally I think Keiths pro edge custom rods are the best bargain in muskie fishing of anything,,lures tackle, boats, the whole package

Go with the Tournament Elite and have either Keith or Thornes make the rod up for you custom.

I cant comment on the St. Croix, the Pro Edge is a great rod for the money but a Thorne Bros. has better attention to detail ( thread work, fit and finish) in my opinion. I'm sure your brother would be happy with any of the three.

I'd be happy with either 3... I know you probably want to make it a surprise, but maybe you're better off letting your brother make the decision. B/C most places won't take rods back once they've been removed from the store. Or maybe ask some non specific questions to get a feel for what he wants.

Go with the Diamondback Keith does a great job as I'm sure Thorne's does also however never bought one from them. Excellent rods.

I got a chance to try out Gregg Thomas 8ft St. Croix Legend Tournament rod back in the winter and wow is that rod light as a feather. Casted a couple of different style baits on it and it was still very light and sensitive. Now if i could only fork over $300 on one! Haha!

sounds like a choice that will be tough to make for you ... pretty difficult to argue. question of details and personal touch i would think ... i've had st. croix's all my life and love them ... when i made the same decision you are wondering about i went with Professional Edge ... i've been very pleased with my decision and i'm planning to get a second one. good luck with making the call, but i'll agree with one of the posts that it would be good to be your brother regardless of what you decide.

Another vote for Thorne Bros. here, I have not tried the other ones either, but have looked at them, a few years back, the brass at St. Croix took a trip to Thornes for a lesson on rod building, dont think Thornes could get a better compliment than that.

I would highly recommend Professional Edge rod, Keith build a great stick, I love the fat cork, much easier on the hands less fatigue. Thornes or Pro Edge are going to be built on the same Diamond back blanks. Heard alot of good things about the St Croixs, but they are little more $$$. My question would be which blank weight less, and which has a better warranty. I love the diamondbacks, they are light and love extra fast action and the backbone. I have only 4 rods in my rotation, 3 diamonds, and 1 All-star for dawgs. I would get a custom rod made to your needs, handle, and guides talk with the builder and tell them what the application of the rod is going to be used for and they might be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck

How about a gift certificate to Thorne's and let him do his own rod shopping? That way you should "escort" him up there and get to do some shopping on your own!

It is pretty cool to get a custom rod with your name on it, etc. Pretty special.

Good luck.
