Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | Anyone have an idea as to who might have made this lure? Obviously the hooks have been changed out........the lure is 8 inches long. Jed V. Attachments ---------------- ![]()

I believe it is a Seeker made by Don Lapp of Land O Lakes, Wi. He made several different lures out plastic foam from the early 80s through the late 90s. He may even still be making them. They come in 2 sizes 8” and 6” and are nice jerkbaits. I still have few of both sizes but don’t use them much. I caught a 51” on the 8” bait. Ray

I have one of those also in my inventory and wondered the same thing about the name of it. Mine is virtually identical, made out of wood, but has treble hooks on it. Thanks to Ray, now I know a bit more! Does anyone know more about the Dick Gries (sp?) baits? I believe I have a couple of his CRANK baits that he called PHANTOM (name also used by a jerk bait manufacturer). I thought they were a newer version of the Peter Haupt (sadly deceased) Ojibway bait (the one that Pete caught the 47 ? pounder out of Round). Can someone tell me more? Don Swanson - Green Bay

Posts: 218 | Dick Gries sold his tackle company and got out of fishing in the mid 90s. He got involved in Sporting Clay shooting and moved to the La Crosse area. The last I heard he was involved with a gun club in the Milwaukee area (SE Wisconsin). The Striker Bait Co did not last more than a year after Dick sold it. I was told that the new owner had health problems that prevented him from operating the company. Dick made some nice lures, which caught muskies. Just like the Seekers, I still have a bunch of his lures, which I don’t use. I tend to use lures that are bigger but not necessarily better. Ray

Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | A few years ago I called the new owner of Gries Tackle as there was interest in his Striker jerkbaits. I asked him if I should post his number. He says "no, no don't do that". I know he did have health problems, but I'm not so sure he could have put out some baits. Oh well, his company now and he can do what he wants with it. Donald, I remember you donating a perch Eddie bait to a muskie in Lake Winter a few (maybe 100?) years ago. Did you ever get another to replace that one?

Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | Thanks for the info guys. I took a pic of this lure last wknd on a lake in Washington. The guy using it told me he has done "very well" on this lure but had no idea who made it. Near as I could tell the lure was made from wood and was extremely light.......felt almost like balsa but it could have been foam for all I know. thanks again! Jed V. I was hoping that you would do some DEEP DIVING and find that bait for me. I still don't understand why that fish headed directly towards the motor! I thought muskies were kinder, gentler creatures! It sure looked like it wanted that Eddie and it sure made the moves to keep it, all by itself! Sure do miss some of the OLD TIMES that we had together in fishing the Capital events! Still can't get over the fact that Ron Ripp is no longer with us! Some of the best have passed far too young! YOU and I will probably live to be a THOUSAND!!! ![]()

Definitely a Seeker by Don Lapp. I used to buy them in Phelps at some of the local watering holes. Still have a few in a bucket in the basement.
