Well, I'm pretty sure my trolling motor batteries are shot. My trolling motor and depth finder quit tonight. Both quit and are hooked up together. Therefore, I know that it isn't simply a problem with either piece of equipment, and the fuses seem to be fine as well. I have a '96 55 lb cable driven Motorguide Brute trolling motor and 2 Everstart, 115 amp, 160 reserve capacity batteries. I was wondering what everyone else has for batteries, and what you guys would recommend. What batteries are the best/longest lasting? Which batteries are the best/longest lasting for a cheaper price? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the help.

I would first tell you to get your battery or batteries "load tested" before you go out and buy new. How old are the batteries? You can have them load tested at any good auto parts store for free, that way you will know if the battery is shot before you go out and buy a new one.

But as for kind of battery to buy, well this topic is basically like a Chevy vs. Ford debate, everyone will mention what they like because that's what they use. But here is a few good ones that I have used and have had nothing but luck with them.

Optimas, Trojans, and also against many peoples objection, Everstart from Wal-Mart. I have done well with them but I know there will be others on here who will put them down immediately but I personally have had great luck with them. But you definitely can't go wrong with Optimas, Trojans and I have heard a lot of good things about Remy batteries I believe. Made by Johnson Control so...Hope this helps, otherwise do a search for batteries and you will get numerous threads.

Thanks for the quick response. It was just tonight that they went down so I haven't had a chance to do a load test on them yet. Thanks again for the help.

Another suggestion to you is, change your hook-up for your locator to your starting battery, you really want only your trolling motor hooked to your deep cycle battery. For example, if you were to leave your locator on one night, that would run that battery down pretty good, I personally would get that changed, but that is me. But yes, get a load test first, that might save you some money.

Go to Remy Battery on 43rd and Lincoln in Milwaukee. I've been using their batterys for many years, except three years ago, I got Trojans. Trojans are great batterys, but they are twiice the price of the Remys. They will load test your existing battery, and if not good, they will provide a really good deep cycle battery.

Is your trolling motor 12Volt? DO you have room for two batterys? If so, I would recommend getting two batterys, and connecting in parallel. Will nearly triple your run time>

Shep hit that one right on the head.

My Favs are, in order:
Optima
Interstate
Fleet Farm (more affordable, and you get a good 4 seasons out of them with proper maintenance)

My trolling motor is actually a 12/24 volt. I am able to switch between the two, and I do have two batteries already that are connected in parallel. I just got a load tester and as soon as I get home I will see what the batteries have for a charge if any. The mystery will be solved. Thanks for the help guys.

I've had nothing but good things to say about my Optimas, but I've also heard good things about Trojans.
