Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | i'm an old man and can't see very well ... so, i got the idea from the kid on the water last night that i might be able to mount my 334c on a longer ram mount to get it up in the air a bit and save me from buying another larger unit for the front of my boat. just stopped into my lowrance dealer and the only one he had was an after-market stainless one (10" top to bottom) but it looked like it would take more to take the unit off (using an allen wrench) of the mount than the traditional lowrance ram mount units with the big ball and socket mount. anybody got any good ideas for me? sled

i've toyed with the idea of making one myself. easiest way i've thought of would probably be to get two ram mounts and a couple extra of the ball bases. cut a pole to length with with flat ends. attach a ball base to either end of the pole and insert it in between the base/ram mount on the boat and the unit mount at the top. you could use a shovel or broom handle so it'd be sturdy, but using wood instead of metal would make it easier to attach the bases to it. with the two ram mounts top and bottom it would be infinitely adjustable for angle, etc plus the added height with the pole would be optional as you could insert it only when you wanted/needed it.

Posts: 1245 Location: Madtown, WI | well your about 5 10 or so aren't ya.....so you looking for one about....5 :-))) You blind old fart! Have you check out RAMS home page?? I like the idea of building one with the ram balls....a heck of a lot cheaper...I think I have a couple spare parts laying around....one ball and one "shaft". One thing you have to keep in mind though....the longer the shaft the longer your "lever arm" is. This will be an issue during travel since your wieght of your unit will be significantly further away from the base, and with the longer arm it will put more force on the base itself. Right now your base can handle the wave action...but put on a real long arm and you might just have enough force to rip the ball right out of the boat. Just keep that in mind. Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | good advice and thanks guys ... spent some time at the site and it looks like custom or another brand is the idea, but also got lots of ideas on the ram site too with some alternative ways to consider. i can't be the only one wearing bifocals and there's gotta be more ideas out there ... hopefully see some tricks that might already have been done ... thanks again ... and Cory .... let me know what you want for the ball and shaft or if you want to trade for something in particular. Posts: 1245 Location: Madtown, WI | man....I hate to say it after that comment...but....I have the small ball and shaft....not the big ones...but for your small unit it would work fine.... Now I need to go throw up... We can talk trade :-)) Cory

another thought is to just get an extra shaft, 2 extra balls and put the 2 balls back to back, then just use the 2 shafts...so ball, shaft, the 2 balls back to back, then the other shaft to the ball on the unit...bingo, 20" is 20" long enough for you Sled? ok that's bad.

another thing you will have to consider...is your power cord and sonar cord long enough to reach up to the new height....

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | how do you get the two balls to stay together ... is there some sort of two-way sack that will hold both balls?
