Hey fellow ski chasers....I think i read a thread on here one time about building your own double cowgirls. Can someone provide the link or if not, can someone provide listing of components with sizes and where you would recommend buying these from. Have checked out Rollie & Helens, mooreslures, stamina, & luremaking. com so far. Heading to AML in July and want to make my own color combos for the trip. thnx

I would suggest contacting Gerry Carroll, he makes Gerry's Girls.
He will make you up tails with custom colors.
He does an awesome job, top of the line components, more than reasonable price too!
His e-mail is:

I second the recommendation to contact Gerry. I did for a trip I'm making in a few weeks to Eagle as well. He does a beautiful job (and fast) at a VERY reasonable price.

Gerry makes some great baits and has tons of custom colors.

There are alot of baitmakers making Double 10's, so in my opinion, it isn't "Copied", it is a business.

Gerry is a great guy and turn around is quick.

Bucktails are not tough to make. Get some #10s from Stamina with some coil and bucktail wire along with some flashabou and beads. Flashabou isn't hard to tie. Look at a few of your other bucktails to see how they are constructed and just do it.

Spacing is the most important factor - if you get the spacing right most other components can be substituted.

Thnx for the response gents. I will contact Gerry about his lures. Would like to know component size/type of each item along with pre-tied flashabeua. Besides being able to make my own color/blade combos, it is a money saver. At 22-25 dollars a pop, i think i can do better in my basement.

thnx again

With the blades and the flashabou and hooks it's not as cheap as you would think! I don't think the profit margins are abnormal with these, they are just plain expensive to make.

Think about this: Does it matter if DCG has a long bead and you use all round beads? I think not. If you're going to go to the trouble of tying your own stuff you might as well make it at least a little different.

Bergy,

I get most of the stuff from Rollie's. It's fun to make your own, and I had the satisfaction of getting a fat 48" on one of mine last month. I recently did a component breakdown of my cost (I use only good components and buy in small quantities so YMMV). I figured it cost me just under $13 to make a double #10 marabou tail.

This might not be complete, but hope it helps:

#10 blades
wire shafts (.60 or .51 -- pre-cut stainless wire shafts under Leader Material)
largest size clevises
bullet lure bodies (I don't normally build with these but when I do I use the 1/5 oz.)
hollow metal beads (I prefer mostly the largest size)
fluoroscent orange plastic beads, size 10 (for spice)
3" coils
Mustad 7/0 hooks are beefy but economical
Bucher split rings
loose marabou or flashabou (not sure if Rollie's has this but they have pretied. I get some small packs at Bass Pro)
thread and head cement (or superglue or glitter fingernail polish)

I normally have to drill out the holes on the orange beads and the bullet bodies to make them fit .60 wire, but that's not so bad. I put the coil in a small vise and tie the marabou that way, then assemble. Experiment and enjoy!

thnx for all the tips guys!!!! Sputterbug, that's exactly what i was looking for. Built my own spinnerbaits and jigs for bass tournaments for many years and what a feeling when you win big money using your own baits. I've contacted Gerry via email and we've been emailing back and forth for a couple of days now. I will definately give him my business as well as order some of my own components for play. Gerry is a great guy and is very knowledgable when it comes to big blade baits. Everyone has been a big help. May everyone catch their personal best this year. A dream fullfillment is only one more cast away!!!
