Hard to control once you put them in there, too.

I think I would try some other method of getting rid of those weeds. Once you get the carp in that pond its a bigger problem getting them out than it is getting the weeds out. Try an old bed spring with a rope attached to it, take it out in the pond with a boat, drop it in, and pull it back to shore with a four wheeler, or whatever is available. I'm not saying this is the right thing to do either, but I've heard of people doing this.

PLEASE do not put grass carp in your pond!!!!!!!!!!!! Would you put Milfoil in there? Same theory. Grass carp are evil evil creatures. Do our aquatic resources a favor and boycott all businesses that sell grass carp. If you don't want to use herbicides or dyes, try catfish. They muddy the water and limit plant growth. They make tasty meals too.

kane county fisheries used to sell triploid grass carp, but i think you need a state authorized permit to buy them, and a state approved survey as to how many you are allowed to put in your body of water. these fish are 100% sterile and do not breed so the worry about them taking over the pond i would assume isn't an issue.

They do eat weeds... every last one! Some messed up lakes around where I live becouse of them. Small numbers are ok I suppose, large numbers you might as well just Kill off your pond and fill it in with dirt!

Couldn't tell you were to look, have you tried a google search?

Triploid Grass carp are not 100% sterile! Repeat, NOT 100% sterile! I wanna say it's something like 93%. THey live a long destructive life too.

where did you get the number 93%? i was under the impression that according to the studies done by idnr and kane county fisheries they only sell males that are 100% sterile.

I just spent three years in the Southeast where any kind of vegetation other than pads is evil stuff. Grass carp are pretty common down there. During meetings and general conversations with academia and the fisheries professionals of those states the topic comes up. I don't know how IL works, but in other states dealers other than the state agency can sell the carp. Any time you here the word triploid, trust that some biologists somewhere are rolling there eyes.

See below: the initial treatment was 87% successful. A pretty substantial effort is further needed to ensure certainty...

Triploid Grass Carp Production

BOYD Z. THOMPSON, ROBERT J. WATTENDORF, RUE S. HESTAND, and JEFFREY L. UNDERWOOD

Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, Post Office Box 1903, Eustis, Florida 32727, USA

Abstract.—Triploid grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were produced by application of various cold or heat shocks to the eggs at different time intervals after addition of water to the milt-roe mixture and for varying durations. Up to 87% of grass carp produced were triploids. The optimum treatment was exposure of grass carp eggs, 1 min after mixture of milt and roe, to an instantaneous temperature increase of 12°C above ambient (26°C) for a duration of 3.5 min. Juvenile grass carp were graded into size-groups, and blood samples from 50-100 fish/group were analyzed with a Coulter counter and channelyzer to determine ploidy. Culling those size-groups with poor percentages of triploidy resulted in populations of up to 95% triploids being returned to ponds for further grow-out. Final selection of 100% triploid grass carp (which were to be stocked for aquatic vegetation management purposes) required analysis of each fish that was 150-250 mm total length.

To possess or stock triploid grass carp, the water owner’s name must appear on the aquaculture permit holder’s restricted species transportation permit. The pond owner may legally possess and/or transport triploid grass carp over 4" in length if he possesses a bill of sale from the aquaculture permit holder or licensed fish dealer certifying that these fish have a triploid number of chromosomes.

The Illinois DNR has published a booklet titled "Management of Small Lakes and Ponds in Illinois" I have the second edition revised in 1997. The Illinois DNR advocates the use of triploid carp in theis booklet. My father in law has a 25 acre pond on his property that he has had surveyed by the state and they report that the weed growth has slowly increased due to the advanced age of the triploid carp currently in the system Their numbers showed that these older carp should be replaced with younger fish with a better appetite to again supress an incresing content of vegetation. Their survey showed that the population of carp has not increased since the last stocking. The fish have just gotten huge and have also apparently lost some of their voraciousness.
