I just got a call from a friend and he told me the story of a documented 71 pounder netted and released from Cass Lake. I don't have all the details yet but I will post what I get as soon as they get to me. The indians I believe netted it and released her. WOW, world record swimming around. Great news for Cass Lake.

Anyone else hear about this?

I would take that news with a grain of salt, or maybe a shaker full.

Every year a "credible" report comes out about a monster muskie netted in MN, either by the DNR or Tribe.

Unfortunately every year it ends up being not true.

If that fish was "documented", than many people should have heard of it by now.

I may be a bit cynical but I have to agree with John on this one.

I would tend to agree, I 've been up here for 3 1/2 years now & you can hear that same story or sort of story every year up at the bigtap. Not saying it is not true, but I want pics to believe.
Kindest regards

It just happened from what I was told. I am not telling everyone it's official. I am just looking for more info. I know people on this site will dig up something if it's true. If not, well it's just some more hype that will keep us wondering.

If true - and with that wonderful fisherie I guess I'd believe about anything! - it would be quite a step up from the current state record. m

I'm not usually one to pay much attention to reports of abnormally large fish. At first, I dismissed it as impossible, but Cass is one of my favorite lakes and I got to thinking about the possibilities.

Big fish were caught off Mille Lacs last year. One of the best documented - the Dahms/Jonesi fish, was 54x28, which the M1st weight calculator puts at 52.92 pounds.

In Aug of 1996, a 60 inch fish was caught, presumably in Minnesota, but an Muskies, Inc member. Girths of certain fish caught recently have been 28, 29 inches, possibly some in the 30s. Although these fish were caught on Mille Lacs, anyone who has ever seen one of those Cass Lake tankers would say it's possible.

If we could find a 60 inch fish with a 31 inch girth, the weight calculator puts it at 72.08 pounds. Couple more inches here and there makes a big difference. Obtaining abnormal lenght and abnormal weight is a long shot, but it only needs to happen once. All I'm saying is that it's possible.

After recently speaking with a very credible source who works with the Department of Natural Resources up here in Bemidji and is in very good terms with the Cass Lake organization, there is no truth behind this. After asking and getting a stern "thats not true" its enough for me to be convinced that this is obviously not true.
