Just wondering at what water temps do you feel you can have success throwing bucktails? I generally struggle during the month of May because I have no real "go to bait". Not sure what is too fast, too big, too small, and so on. I did catch one small one and a had various follows but so far the southern zone has been pretty uneventful. Any help??. Thanks in advance for your information.

if it is any help, I was throwing a slippery sam as fast as I could in 50 degree temps 2 weeks ago and fish were smoking it like it was their job.
Nothing is ever too fast for a muskie\pike. NOTHING!

Also had some recent action on topwaters.

pretty much hit the water, go through a slough of bait presentations, not just for 5 minutes and switch, but, start fast, and gradually slow down till you find what they want.

I've had better success in cooler water with spinnerbaits. Sometimes those springtime fish are surface shy... and spinnerbaits get down in there face better... and sometimes make the difference between a looker and an eater.

My favorite is a LongTale Hot Shot with a thin metal #8 Indiana blade. Awesome vibe at a slow to moderate retrieve that seems to work well in the spring. Covers water quickly and will at the very least locate a few fish for ya that you can catch on a "finesse" bait when you come back on 'em later.

So far with the many cold fronts in May I have not seen bucktails or spinnerbaits be all that effective....yet...give us some warm few days in a row and look out..
I agree that spinnerbaits should be thrown as much or more in May as bucktails...at least on the waters I fish spinnerbaits can really move fish over bucktails some days...
as far as water temps, I don't feel it's water temps per say as fish mood/activity level that dictates when/where I throw them

It may help you to know that I've had several muskie follows already this spring on my bass spinnerbaits, and the Muskie season for the Northern Zone of WI doesn't open for another 2 days. Water temps here are aroud 57-63, therefore, no, I don't think it's too cold for bucktails/spinnerbaits.

Wouldn't worry too much about time of year on that one. We moved many fish on bucktails last weekend...and talk about fast...yeah...they can move.

Consider weather before time of year.

Muskies will hit bucktails anytime of year, I just caught one during a blizzard last month in Indiana on a custom TM tail bucktail. I generally like to start with spinnerbaits early season and use bucktails more as the water warms up.

Bucktails will catch fish every day of the year. Other lures I would put in that same category Bulldawgs, Rad Dawg SpinnerBaits, and Topwater.

One thing I've seen work many times in the spring, If fish are following your bucktail but won't hit is to downsize. A mepps #5 with no hair can be deadly in these situations.
