Posts: 1316 Location: Madison, WI | When you're out with a guide, what are some typical questions you ask? Proper bait presentation, seasonal patterns, Structure of the lake? I know the ultimate goal is to put some fish in the boat, but what else are you looking to get out of the whole experience?

Posts: 8788 | Some things I may ask: I will ask about the predominant types of forage, seasonal movements of that forage, other gamefish species, spawning patterns, structure, weed types, bottom composition, what presentations seem to work best, pretty much everything. I don't look at a guide trip as "putting fish in the boat"... Of course that would be nice, but my mindset is learning the lake so I can fish it better next time. Depending on how forthcoming that guide is and how many times I've fished the lake some of the conversations get pretty in depth. It's been my experience that a good guide will pick up on where you are as an angler, how well you know the lake, what you want to learn, what you might not know, and taylor their approach to your needs. It's always different. First time on the lake I'm looking for spots/areas to fish, getting a feel for what kind of structure there is, pretty basic "where to start" kind of stuff.

Posts: 536 Location: Brainerd Area | I think it all depends on what the client wants to get out of the trip. Are you out just to put fish in the boat or do you want to learn the lake as well I have clients that just want to put fish in the boat so I dont go into much detail about the lake. They simply ask me what should I be using and how should I work it? I do let them know what kind of structure we are fishing or going to fish and thats about it and they dont care cuz they just want to catch fish. Now, if you get someone that wants to learn the lake it a new ball game. Pointing out structure to look for for diffrent times of the year. What baits work better from structure to structure. Seasonal patterns, bait fish, triggering methods and so on. These are the clients that dont care if they boat a fish (although it would be nice) but would rather learn the water to lessen there learning curve for the next time they are out on that body of water. My 2 cents Duck

I have picked up a few bad habits over the years that have cost me some fish, hope to iron all them out in early June when I take my first guided trip!!!!
